I was waiting for a review as well and finally I gave up and bought it--
for the most part the picture is great-- all the outdoor scenes are bright, clear, and colorful. There are a few indoor scenes in the cabin where there is intense grain due to poor authorizing. If you liked the movie, it's worth getting. Last edited by AKORIS; 05-04-2009 at 02:32 PM. Reason: correection |

I don't have the Blu of Breed but I own the DVD and was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It's better than your average STV horror flick although a bit predictable. Still, it was fun and well directed. I might upgrade to Blu if the price was right one day...

Just got done watching this quasi-obscure killer animal film from a decade ago.
It was surprisingly solid, with Michelle Rodriguez once again showing she's a very capable leading action lady. Even with the needlessly goofy final minute "gotcha" ending, I still had fun sitting through it. In terms of technical attributes, the AQ of the film was really good for its age. The PQ, though? Its mostly pretty solid, but once it gets into those really dark, really grainy scenes, an obscene abundance of scanner noise rears its ugly head, making those scenes a bit hard on the eyes. I imagine a new transfer and better encoding could easily remove the scanner noise issues, but I doubt anyone will give this film a new release. As is, its not a bad film by any means. Perfectly serviceable late night suspense horror thriller fodder. Best bought in that fairly affordable double feature with that Steve Miner Day of the Dead remake which made me ask "Who the hell is AnnaLynne McCord's agent? She's a great actress that needs another Excision style powerhouse role to finally push her to mainstream recognition and not be stuck with silly low budget horror movies and crap with The Miz". |

![]() ![]() After inheriting an island cabin from their recently deceased uncle, two brothers bring their college friends to the isolated destination for a weekend getaway. Their vacation takes a terrifying turn, however, when they discover that the island is inhabited by ravenous wild dogs. As the vicious canines surround the cabin, our five overwhelmed protagonists, with only some climbing ropes and a hunting bow at their disposal, struggle to find a quick exit before they are reduced to kibbles and bits. The 2006 survival horror film, The Breed, which was produced by Wes Craven and directed by Nicholas Mastandrea, graces us with no shortage of clichéd contrivances. The brothers, played by Oliver Hudson and Eric Lively, harbor longtime resentment towards each other, but ultimately reach a meaningful reconciliation in the face of peril. A championship climber, played by Michelle Rodriguez (The Fast and the Furious), is wounded early on, but will still muster enough tough resilience for some heroic moves. A blonde, played by Taryn Manning (Orange Is the New Black), is a hard-drinking party girl who may as well have the word, “goner”, written on her forehead. A fifth wheel, played by Hill Harper, will provide some comic relief before facing the enemy. Thankfully, the end result redeems itself due to the fact that all of these characters are sufficiently developed enough to be elicit our sympathy when their situation goes south. I love horror films that take place on islands and I love when-animals-attack movies, so The Breed, while wearing the influence of the 1977 drive-in cult classic, The Pack, on its sleeve, hits all of the right notes under my roof for a solidly entertaining Sunday afternoon viewing. There's a bit of muddled nonsense about the villainous dogs being the result of military genetic experiments, but this development is an unnecessary embellishment for a simple man-versus-nature storyline that works best when scriptwriters do not overthink it. The trained canine actors are supremely menacing, especially when they quietly appear from all sides around their prey, and the remote setting works its own atmospheric magic to amp up the tension. This First Look Studios Blu-ray, which, with its #988 site listing, is clearly an early release for the format, still looks mostly great in terms of picture quality. A 24-minute making-of extra is fun in its own right because it goes into depth about the actors working with the trained animals. Last edited by The Great Owl; 05-06-2019 at 02:43 AM. |

I continue to enjoy this flick every time I revisit it. It’s well-filmed, decently acted, maintains a brisk pace, and has a good lean script with no real cringeworthy rubbish or social baggage. It looks pretty solid for an older blu release, and has plenty of tense, entertaining moments to keep me in the film. It’s clearly more of a suspense/actioner than straight horror, but the score often leans more toward that of a horror film, lending a darker atmosphere and keeping the tension high before and during attack sequences.
Looks to me like this might be OOP, or otherwise dwindling down into retail obscurity. Fans or collectors that might have an interest in this flick might want to grab it while copies are still floating around out there. |
