Default Star Wars - Jedi: Fallen Order

Unlike Titanfall, the Star Wars project by Respawn is a third-person, action adventure game set in a galaxy far, far away and is being worked on by the studio’s new team lead by Stig Asmussen, who formerly worked at Sony Santa Monica Studio.

Asmussen previously directed God of War III and served as lead environment artist and art director on God of War and God of War II, respectively.

Respawn is currently hiring for the new Star Wars project and you can find available positions here.

EA acquired the exclusive rights to develop and publish AAA blockbuster Star Wars games in 2013. In addition to Respawn, EA has studios Visceral Games, DICE, Capital Games, BioWare, Motive developing Star Wars games currently. Former Uncharted franchise creative director and writer Amy Hennig is working on Visceral's unnamed Star Wars project.

Quote:
At EA right now, we have multiple studios building a variety of great Star Wars games spanning different genres. We are all united by our teams’ passion for Star Wars™ stories, characters, and adventures.

Today, I’m thrilled to be able to announce that EA and the talented team at Respawn Entertainment have expanded our relationship to include the development of an all-new 3rd person action adventure game set in the Star Wars universe. They join our other great studios – Visceral Games, DICE, Capital Games, BioWare, Motive and more – who are currently working on Star Wars projects. If you’re interested in joining us on this adventure, you can visit our Careers page – we have openings at Visceral and Motive and will be sharing more on these experiences soon.

Over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Vince Zampella and his group. Their obsession with making games that feel amazing has helped make Titanfall one of the most successful new game launches of this generation. And now, with a new team led by Stig Asmussen, we get to see what they can do when you combine that great attention to gameplay with the power of Star Wars.

There’s never been a better time to be a Star Wars fan. The passion we’re seeing for Star Wars from gamers – whether they’ve been along for the ride since Star Wars™: Episode IV: A New Hope™, or were introduced to the magic of Star Wars with Star Wars™: The Force Awakens™ – is fueling our development teams and our partners to create unique interactive extensions of this deep, meaningful universe. As a game maker, nothing is more exciting.

Thank you and May the Fourth be with you,

Patrick

I’ve got a good feeling about this…

We’ve all heard this story before. At 5 years old you see something beyond comprehension, an extraordinary fantasy that at first doesn’t seem real, but in time becomes inspirational law. The heroes, the villains, the visions, the sounds, the music, imprinted forever. Of course I am describing Star Wars™, the most influential franchise in modern history, and we at Respawn Entertainment are honored to have the chance to contribute to that legacy.

I am happy to announce our partnership with Electronic Arts and Lucasfilm to deliver a whole new adventure to the galaxy.**

For me, just typing these words is surreal. I have been playing Star Wars games my whole life, now I get to make a Star Wars game. On top of that, I get to do it at Respawn, a studio comprised of the most talented collection of game makers, creators, visionaries, and (most importantly) advocates for the player, that I have had the good fortune to work with. And we, like you all, have no shortage of Star Wars passion.

The entire company erupted in cheers when it was announced that this would be our next endeavor.

But it’s not all fun and games — we promise to pay respect to the Star Wars legacy at all times, a fact that will be constantly reinforced and honored as a central game design tenet. Fans should expect the exemplary level of quality first established at Respawn with Titanfall, a game that epitomizes our studio’s dedication to slick, larger-than-life action and fun, groundbreaking mechanics. Moving forward, we couldn’t ask for a better universe in which to continue this journey, and although I would love to share all of the exciting places we are going, we have the following piece of information to divulge with you all today:

We’ll be making a third-person action/adventure game set in the Star Wars universe.

Now, I understand on the surface this might sound a bit dry, but developing a game within the ever-expanding Star Wars universe opens up so many paths for us to go down, and an unparalleled playground to design within. We have already planted the seeds by assembling a small, but incredibly talented team, ready for the amazing journey that lies ahead. With this in mind we are looking to expand the dream.

Do you want to join us on a journey to a galaxy far, far away? We are hiring in all departments.

Looking back to 1977, I witnessed Star Wars unleash its magic on the big screen, forever changing me (little did I know how much at the time). The crazy thing is this magic doesn’t have a shelf life. Decades later I observed the same wonder in my kids’ eyes as they watched A New Hope. What a rarity, for a book, a film, or even a game to have that kind of impact, spanning several generations, even promising to continue into future ones. The opportunity to be a part of that is not something to take for granted. This is an opportunity that I, the team, and Respawn could not and would not pass up.

This is the chance of a lifetime.

Hopefully not set between the prequels and the original trilogy.

They have beat that space horse to death.

Normally, I'd dismiss any new Star Wars game. But since this is being directed by Stig Asmussen, I'm looking forward to it. The original God of War trilogy was pretty damn good.

The other game by Amy Hennig is also something to look out for.

Sounds promising. 3rd person is my view of choice, so that's cool it's not limited to just FPS view. I'm hoping it's some kind of adventure game, but wondering if this will be similar to 1313, that was canceled awhile back? Different team, so maybe it'll be something new.

That 1313 was a complete loss. The folks at Disney should of did "something" with it.

Jedi Fallen Order is due out late 2019. Set between Ep.III & IV and you play as a Jedi.

Sounds interesting. I hope it has some open world features, and not just linear stage to stage gameplay. With the word Jedi in the title, that will get people expecting to wield a lightsaber.

Indeed, they did confirm we would be playing a Jedi, I hope they have a great combat system.

Hm. Seems interesting enough, but we'll see. I'm itching for a non-BF SW game.

I don't remember, did Respawn have issues with their game? 2 years later and we barely know anything, and haven't seen anything. Some people don't like it when games are announced early, but to me, if you do, then you should do more than give commentary from the audience 2 years later lol.

EA STAR WARS Trailer (E3 2016) - YouTube
That's a different game that was in production at Visceral which EA closed down and the game got canned in its current form.

Quote:
EA is shutting down Visceral Games, the studio behind games like Battlefield Hardline and Dead Space, the publisher said today. The Star Wars game in development at Visceral will be revamped and move to a different studio, EA says, although it will now be something completely different.

“Our Visceral studio has been developing an action-adventure title set in the Star Wars universe,” EA’s Patrick Söderlund said in a blog post. “In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game. Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design.”

Söderlund added that Visceral will be “ramping down and closing” and that “we’re in the midst of shifting as many of the team as possible to other projects and teams at EA.”

“Lastly,” he said, “while we had originally expected this game to launch late in our fiscal year 2019, we’re now looking at a new timeframe that we will announce in the future.”

UPDATE (3:37pm): In an e-mail to employees obtained by Kotaku, Söderlund offered more details on the Star Wars game, which was codenamed Ragtag:

A development team from across Worldwide Studios will take over development of Ragtag, led by the EA Vancouver team that has already been working on the project. Steve Anthony will lead this team, and we will use much of the work that has been done to date by Visceral – the assets of Ragtag that have already been built will be the foundation of this new game.

It’s safe to presume that the new incarnation of this Star Wars game will involve “games as a service” elements, as has been EA’s mandate for quite some time now.

EA was not clear about the status of longtime Uncharted director Amy Hennig, who joined Visceral to direct this Star Wars game after she left Naughty Dog in early 2014. In an e-mail, an EA spokesperson said: “We are in discussions with Amy about her next move.”

I’d been hearing rumors for quite some time now that Visceral’s Star Wars game was in trouble, and that studios across EA were brought in to help give it vision and direction. Now, that game is no more.

No I'm not referring to that game. In the trailer, Respawn were clearly working on a game where a Jedi padawan was fighting a Sith guy. Look at 1:08-1:25. I'm just surprised that 2 E3's later and we haven't seen anything new. Only today they told us the title and a brief setting and synopsis. I've been waiting since watching that trailer live to see more lol.

They were like six months into development at that time. They aren't going to pull a square Enix and reveal everything a decade before the games releases.
