Default The Shawshank Redemption just turned 20

It's been 20 years since one of the most beloved films of all time hit the screen, i was 13 when i saw it in theaters 3 times and i loved it and became an instant favorite.

It flopped despite great reviews and became a word of mouth fave on video and cable as it became a popular and beloved film.

I remember a buddy and I wanted to go see PULP FICTION but it was sold out so we went to see this instead and we were both blown away. We went PULP the next week and were blown away by that too.

Released October 1994 so not quite twenty, but that's fitting.

I'm sure they were hoping for a gross 5-10 times that. Yeah, it was not technically a flop, but whatever.

Great movie though.

A college friend and I went to see The Shawshank Redemption on opening night, because I had read the Stephen King novella years before and was interested to see how it would play out on screen.

The theater was only about 25% full, although it was opening night. It's pretty funny thinking about that now, considering how popular the movie has become.

It is a good movie and one you should definitely see - especially considering your top 10 in your signature.

For me, that's all it is - a "good" movie, but I can see how and why some hold it in such high regard.

Red: Well, I'll be damned. Did I say you were good? Shit, you're a Rembrandt!

Andy Dufresne: Yeah. The funny thing is - on the outside, I was an honest man, straight as an arrow. I had to come to prison to be a crook.

I actually saw this for the first time two years ago. The "controversy" of Shawshank dethroning The Godfather and The Dark Knight on IMDB spurred me to check it out from my University Library.

Saying that it was good is an understatement.

I visited the prison where they filmed some of the scenes from. It was surreal. To be in the courtyard where Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins stood was pretty cool.

I saw this film for the first time several years ago through the Canadian Blu-ray SteelBook and I was really taken by it.

Phenomenal story, phenomenal cast, and phenomenal directing on Darabont's part. I can't believe it's been 20 years already.
