Anyone have a D-VHS player and tapes? I got one of ebay and have some tapes coming. Can't wait to watch True Lies, Ghost Dog and The Limey in 1080i.
Here is a list of titles. Quote:

Isn't it risky to invest in old, obsolete video technology, due to the fact, the replacement parts may be difficult to find, if something goes wrong with it? Besides, the majority of those movies you've listed, are on blu-ray in 1080p, and lossless audio.

Depends on what you paid and how much you want the films that are not available better elsewhere.

I have 70 of them not counting duplicates. You can see a picture of them in my gallery.
These are actually called d-theater and they are copy protected. You would have to use component out to capture them and that is an extra step of d/a+a/d. Hdmi out at 1080i from hd-dh5u or 100u is stellar. These are recorded at constant bitrate if 28mbps in mpeg-2. It is nearly impossible to tell from blu-ray. The audio is 2ch pcm + full bitrate 640kbps dolby digital 5.1 + optional full bitrate 1.5mbps dts 5.1. Tapes are on average $15-30 on used market and plenty of rare ones above $100. So not really a practical format but truely collectable. Tapes are capable of holding 50gb so they could match blu-ray but back in 2003 having an mpeg decoder capable of 1080p was a dream. |

There is even a more interesting format called hi-vision laserdisc. These were produced in 1992. 1080i content was pressed onto 12" diameter cd like discs using an analog compression technique called muse. If you think 1080i in 2002 is impressive, think about 1080i in with 4ch(3 front+mono rear) discrete audio in 1992. It was only released in Japan in extremely limited quantities(think less than 500 copies per title)
I have 15 of the 33 film titles ever released in my collection. Also have the player + muse decoder to play them. You can see them in my gallery. |

I have 2 players (one is DTS-capable, the other isn't) and about 3/4 of the titles. I just love dead/obsolete formats- I also have just about every HD-DVD title released in the US (many Universal titles overlap on D-VHS), and every CED videodisc!
D-VHS is the only way I know of to get True Lies, The Haunting, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Limey, Novocaine, The Time Machine and Dr. T and the Women in HD- also the theatrical cut of Daredevil, as the Blu-Ray is only the 'director's cut' or whatever they wanna call it. |
