There is no 4K Blu-ray format.

There are Blu-Ray players now that upscale existing Blu-Rays to 4K for use with a 4K TV. I know this is not the same thing as a dedicated 4K disc format, but it's the best option currently available.

To the OP, I have not used any personally, so I cannot comment on the quality of them, but I have seen a few around.

I just recently brought a LG ultra HD 4K TV model UB8500 from hhgregg and I am looking at getting a 4K blu ray player to take advantage of the 4K format. I was thinking about buying a 4K player.

The best you can do for now is go the 4K upscale route. It will take your 1080p blu-ray and upscale the source to your new 4K display. But, it will not be actual 4K, as mentioned there is no 4K disc format, and therefore there are no 4K players.

Checkout the Oppo blu-ray players (103, 103D, 105, 105D) which will upscale to your 4K set, and there are other brands that upscale as well. Enjoy your new display!

Your TV will upscale anything you send in to "4K".

I put 4K in quotation marks because it's not really 4K...

Indeed. I have found in my case that the TV does a better job than the player at upscaling. FYI: I have Sony KD-65X9005A fed from an Oppo BD-103.

The Oppo's forte is more in the de-interlacing realm. I use my Lumagen RadianceXD for scaling purposes.

I know the Sony BDP-S6200 has the feature. I considered it but I don't have a 4K TV and probably will not for quite some time. So I got a region free BDP-S5200.

Unless there is some other feature you really want in these "premium" 4K players, then the scaling done by your 4K TV will be better than that of a $150 blu-ray player.
