So! This was just delivered. Looks to be a pressed Blu-ray disc although for some reason the back cover includes the disclaimer "This disc is expected to play back in DVD Video 'play only' devices, and may not play in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives," which is usually present on MOD DVDs. Also there is not one word indicating whether this is the subtitled French-language version or the alternate English language version. All it says is "BLACK & WHITE/1966/102 MINUTES/2.35:1" with nothing about the audio. Great.

"Mademoiselle" is a movie I've loved since the first time I saw it (in a cinema in 1966). If I remember correctly, when the picture was originally filmed everyone in the cast spoke in French. In the dubbed version, Jeanne Moreau did her own English track (beautifully) but everyone else was dubbed (for the most part very poorly).
THE MGM DVD that came out in North America decades ago featured the French version. But when BFI released a Blu-ray in England a few years back they shockingly included only the English dub. Extra surprising because the package's excellent liner notes made a point of mentioning how poorly the film was served by that version, suggesting that as one reason for the film's box office failure. Guess whoever wrote those notes assumed that BFI's release would include the subtitled French version. I can only hope this new edition doesn't restrict itself to that very flawed English dub. |
