Default No one else but him/her....

Which actor/character combination would you say "no one else could have played that role but him or her"?

Shockingly for me, Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty is just edged out into second place by Slim Pickens as Major 'King' Kong in Dr Strangelove.

Hayden Christensen & Jake Lloyd as Anakin Skywalker, Ewan as Obi-Wan

This is not a troll post.

He's brilliant with subtle expressions and a few scenes in AOTC such as Shmi dying and the garage scene fllwd by the funeral are brilliant. (And the 'Padme's Reminations' scene in ROTS.)

Take out the dialogue and you'll understand:

As for Jake, it makes for more interesting cinema to witness a good-natured kid transform into Vader rather than him being evil all along (like Voldemort). Personally, I feel his reason for turning was handled beautifully. It also makes more sense that he'd turn back for family in ROTJ.
Padme dying was mostly due to shock from learning about Anakin's deeds. Imagine coming home one day and learning that your husband is Ted Bundy. She would've lived to take care of her kids but there are a hundred things that can go wrong with pregnancy; the same reason one is supposed to avoid stress during that period. She didn't 'choose' to die voluntarily. Her mind was in shock and her body couldn't take all this stress, especially after just giving birth.

Agree about HC as Anakin in AOTC; the scene when he confessed to Padme that he had taken out all of those Sandpeople (as revenge for their capturing & k. his mother) was some of the best acting in the entire SW Saga; he went through a gamut of emotions in this relatively short scene, i.e. rage, guilt, and sadness. Excellently done, and a lesser actor wouldn't have been able to pull this off nearly as well.

Also agree about Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty in Blade Runner; perfect casting, and I can't see anyone else in that role...

Shelly Duvall as Olive Oyl in Altman's Popeye.

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones & Han Solo.

Klaus Kinski in Aguirre, Wrath of God.

DeNiro & Pacino in their respective roles in Heat.

Dustin Hoffman in Straw Dogs.

Pacino in Scarface.

DeNiro in Taxi Driver - no one else could have played Travis Bickle as well...

DeNiro in King of Comedy, Raging Bull, and the Cape Fear re-make.

And that's just off the top of my head...

Dustin Hoffman in "Hook". He captured the classic version of that character perfectly, and it remains my personal favorite of his roles.

I'll restrict my choices only to roles that have been played by different actors over the years.
  • Kevin Conroy as Batman in any kind of animated format.
  • Christopher Reeve as Superman.
  • William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy as Kirk & Spock.
  • Sean Connery as James Bond
  • Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi
  • Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor
I few years ago, I would've said Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. But not anymore!

Michael J. fox as "Marty" Chris Lloyd as "Doc". Michael J's "Marty" felt a little different in the sequels but as far as the first movie goes, he was perfection. Doc was perfect in all three.

In all seriousness, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. They screwed up the character, but he sure didn't. I genuinely can't imagine anyone else.

I disagree with everything in this post, which is why I do not have an answer to this thread. There have been perfect casting choices, like Sean Connery, but there will be another generation of great actors ready to take over, like Daniel Craig.

Daniel Day-Lewis was perfect as Bill the Butcher, Daniel Plainview, Abraham Lincoln, and pretty much everybody else he's ever played. But that doesn't mean someone else couldn't have been great in those parts.
