Default When you have to be polite....

Yesterday, I spent a pleasant day with a good friend. Great food and wonderful conversation. Even though the weather was quite chilly, we hiked around the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs before settling down to a Thanksgiving feast. I continued to Blu massage him a bit, still trying to get him to at least buy the Sony S300 player at Best Buy today because of the free movies and gift card and great price (he can sooo afford it).

But did you ever then have to sit down and watch a regular DVD being played on a regular DVD player (that doesn't even upconvert), although the TV you're watching it on is probably an early 1080i Hi Def? And did you then have to bite your tongue--repeatedly--because the viewing experience was really, truly, genuinely awful? So awful, in fact, that you wanted to scream aloud, "Give me knitting needles so that I may plunge them into my eyes because I CAN"T WATCH THIS CRAP ONE MINUTE LONGER!"?

Well, I didn't scream aloud and make a Blu ass of myself. I sat there, quietly. But, upon departure, I once more gently reminded him that he ought to head over to Best Buy today and at least *consider* buying an S300 at that great price.

Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest. I feel better now. Thanks.

-Greg

I've been through that, but I can't keep my mouth shut... with my friends there is no need for tact. I'm usually not alone either, my roommate usually chimes in too.

Everytime I talk about blu-ray around my friends they always get jealous. I don't know why, all they need to do is find a job. Maybe I should recommend myself to look for other friends.

Instead of going crazy on my friends about sd and bd, I try to invite them over and experience it. Most don't have hi-def tvs. But those that do, I hope will buy at least a ps3.

Exactly, tell your friend(s)who do own an HDTV to buy a blu-ray player. Without it, your HDTV is just another tv

and my parents wonder why I don't go over to their house to watch SD-DVD and have pizza, lol. The poor quality of SD-DVD makes me nauseous.

I always invite everyone over to watch movies, cause I am the only one in my family that has HD equipment, in fact I think that I am the only person I know who even has an HDTV.

I can watch every channel that has NFL broadcasting except for NBC because they don't have HD broadcasting. Just watching Sunday Night Football on NBC drives me nuts and hoping 2009 will arrive. That way all channels will be digital and have HD signals.

I guess what really startled me was how bad the non-upconverted DVD looked. I just never remembered how bad.

I definitely feel your pain. I was at my parents place for a double b-day dinner (my sister and my sister-in-law), and afterwards everyone sat down with the kids to watch "surf's up" on DVD..... My parent's have a 28" SD TV and a sub $100 regular dvd player.... it was painful. I got up and left half way through the movie.

On the bright side, my parents are building themselves a new house and already have plans to purchase a home theatre setup including an HDTV and blu-ray player.... so all is not lost.

I'm a dick, so I say stuff like ''oh my god! how can you watch this. jesus. tell you what, lets go to blockbuster, pick this up on blu ray, go to my house and watch it the way its supposed to be seen.'' then I smash their tv. that's how I got my parents to upgrade.

My parents own a 50" HD compatible tv meaning you must possess or be subscribed to a service and have a cable box or satellite dish that provides HD programming in order to watch HD channels. On the other hand, I have a beautiful 32" Sharp Aquos 1080p with 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. My PS3 and my tv are like hamburger and fries; can't have one without the other

You're not getting Sunday Night Football in HD?!?

(My local NBC affiliate broadcasts SNF in HD over-the-air.)

I remember when the PS3 didn't have upconverting functionality, I almost dreaded watching a DVD, upconverting improved it, but it's still not as good as BD, perhaps HD-DVD quality?

I don't keep my mouth shut and most people get annoyed by it. They give me a look as if I was bashing their religion. People need to get Blu-ray and fast.

I sometime get people being impolite at my house. classic was ''is this blu ray? I don't see what the big deal is, it doesn't look any better.''

me: ''thats just because you haven't seen them side by side''

them: ''well I don't see how it would be any different''

me: ''are you stupid. here, hold on.'' puts in bd store demo disc with side by side comparison.

watching disc.

them: ''that's obviously just made up. my dvds don't look like that.''

me: ''how big is your tv?''

them: ''i don't know 27 inches maybe?''

me: ''oh, ok. well.....talk to me when you get a real tv. its no wonder you can't tell the difference. my eyes would be bad too if I had to squint just to see the tv, let alone what's on it.''

its amazing I have friends at all.

That awesome! I've had a similar experience. My brother-in-law bought a great new Sony HD TV last year. 63 inches I believe. He invited me over to watch a football game and he was still running DirecTV standard rather than HD. I kept on mentioning how much better his TV would look with the upgrade until he basically told me to shut the hell up.

He understood only when I had him over to watch a game on my TV.
