Most of you will very likely know our label due to our Hammer releases. But these are not the only classic films in our LineUp. About 2 years ago we set up another series that would be divided into decades (currently we released films from the 60s, the 70s & the 80s). Most of the previous releases are basically similar to internatonal releases:
- Forbidden World - Willard - Ben - Satan Bug - Silent Night, Deadly Night 1 But the latest release and the upcoming one might actually be of interest for people from outside Germany: In Fall last year we released Michael Reeves’ THE SORCERERS ![]() And the main reason aside from the film itself why this edition is noteworthy is the documentary that Dima Ballin produced for us. Planned as 30-minute featurette covering solely Reeves’ second film, THE MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION OF MICHAEL REEVES quickly became a feature length documentary about the life of … well, Michael Reeves. The outcome is IMHO so stunning that Dima and I opted to submit it to festivals around the world. And sure enough the documentary was having its world premiere at last years Frightfest. And went on to play at several other festivals before it was released by us as the bonus element for THE SORCERERS. So this might definetly be worth checking out! |

Up next is Hajime Satô’s THE TERROR BENEATH THE SEA (aka. WATER CYBORG).
![]() To my knowledge this movie never had any HD release anywhere in the world. We were able to get a completely new 35mm print from Japan and create our own HD master. As with lots of Japanese classic genre movies, an alternate version was created for the US release. Our disc includes both the Japanese theatrical version (German & Japanese audio only) and the US theatrical cut (German & English audio). While some scenes unique to the US release had to upscaled, the majority of the film can be enjoyed in beautiful HD. The relase will hit the stores on the 28th February 2020 and can be pre-ordered from next week on. |

In my initial Post for THE TERROR BENEATH THE SEA (aka. WATER CYBORG) I already pointed out that we created a new transfer.
And judging by the screenshots (already compressed jpgs) I’d say it is looking pretty good. Wouldn’t you agree? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for that.
I ordered this (cover B) but am curious for any insight into why the new Toei print wasn't OAR (2.35:1)? Toei's DVD (2004) was and even Dark Sky's DVD was 1.85 so there would appear to be versions in Japanese and English available. |

Hi Ivo Scheloske
When you post here about the technical merits of your releases, it's only natural to expect questions. Had my post had been negative or provocative that might be one thing. If you don't have an answer, fine, that's easy enough to communicate. But sites like this are exactly your target demographic and intentionally ignoring an honest enquiry is a piss-poor strategy and won't much endear you to the limited niche who buys your product. |

sorry for not getting back to you earlier. I'm still waiting for feedback from our technical department. But where did you find the info that the OAR is 1:2,35? Because even IMDB lists it as 1:1,33. In regards to the soundtrack we do have a second version on the disc, which is the US cut and it has english sound. As I don't own neither the US DVD nor the japanese one, I can't tell you if they somehow cropped the picture and if Dark Sky managed to synch the english sound completele to the japanese version. I highly doubt it due to the different scenes used for both versions. |

Hi Ivo Scheloske
Thanks for your response. Both the Japanese Movie Database and The Motion Picture Producer's Association of Japan (Eirin) each indicate the film was released in Cinemascope (シネマスコープ), which was 2.35:1 http://www.jmdb.ne.jp/1966/cp002560.htm http://db.eiren.org/contents/03000009571.html In 2004 and again in 2012, Toei released the DVD in Japan. I've since sold my disc and have no way of verifying it, but Amazon.co.jp lists the earlier disc as being 2.35:1 and the newer one as 1.33:1. I checked the DarkSky disc and despite their claims of being 1.85:1 on the box, it is in fact taken from a 1.33:1 AR print which they further matted into faux widescreen (see below). Perhaps the only circulating prints available are Academy ratio, I don't know. That's why I was interested when you mentioned working from a new print and hoped it was a remaster in OAR. When I noticed that Amazon.de stated yours as being 1.33:1, I wanted to confirm with you. The captures you posted look far better than the DarkSky DVD, as I would have expected. I've included a few captures from the DVD for comparison below. Although they aren't exact matches, yours shows a bit more information on all sides and better color. Can you speak a bit more about the print Toei loaned you? Cheers in advance From the DarkSky DVD ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hi John,
about the aspect ratio of TERROR BENEATH THE SEA, it was surely not shot in 2.35:1 or 1:1,85. It was originally planned to be a three-part story on american TV, but was released there some years later as a feature film. Co-Producer William Ross stated in Stuart Galbraith´s book MONSTERS ARE ATTACKING TOKYO: "It was filmed at Toei´s TV division in standard 35mm format." I own a german 35mm print which is clearly 1.33 or 1.1.37:1. So that is the correct aspect ratio (allthough the german distributor invented the word "Wide Vision" for the advertising of this standard format movie). I hope this helps. :-). The german 35mm trailer is standard format, too. Best wishes, Ingojira Last edited by Ingojira; 03-27-2020 at 03:03 PM. |
