A bit more info on Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII.

Looks like more spin-offs will be coming, hopefully using their tasty Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII engine.

Square has always put a lot of love and time into their games, even if the story lines were rather shotty for a while there. I doubt we will see any sort of frame rate hiccup when playing through 13. It was amazing what they were able to get out of the PS2 in 12 and I can't wait to see updated gameplay footage from 13.

I hope their licensing of the Unreal engine for their games after 13 won't hurt the graphic originality that Square normally provides by making it look like every other game that uses the engine.

Looks like the PSP Final Fantasy I & II remakes are coming to the US quite soon.

I'd rather they'd updated FFVI or something and improved the animation more but we'll see.

I am an avid lover of the FF series, except VII (thought it sucked ass, they took all the good stuff out of it). I am hoping this is going to be worth a purchase.

Default In Engine

Are you absolutely certain this is In-Engine and not pre-rendered? I'm dubious because Square is so well noted for the exceptional quality of the pre-rendered cinematics in their games. Frankly, this clip is impressive either way, but it would literally be the best in-engine work I've ever seen.

First post. I've played electronic games nearly every day of my life since the release of pong.

As incredible as it looks, it's still very clear to me which parts of that trailer are realtime-recorded and full on high quality FMV. The FMV parts look much softer for a start.

There are slight imperfections if you look at the battle sequence screenshots. Slight aliasing on some edges still. As with previous FF's the ingame character models and FMV models are somewhat stylistically different.

This is Lightning in-engine: (depth of field looks superb but FMV effect would be much better still, shadow under left shoulder strap also has some step-stoned edging, aliasing on difficult hair)

And how she looks now in the FMV:

They showed similar pics for fight night round 3... but real time game play looks like shit, say launch title all you want but they technically had over 1-2 years easy for creating these titles (and dont say anything less because the ps3 was supposed to be released when the 360 was blu-ray and all)

No it wasn't... it was due out about 5 months later. Either way, it doesn't matter when the technology was made availiable, what matters is when developers begin working with it. Square has been working on this title soley with PS3 tech for a couple years. FNR3 was created on 360 hardware, then quickly ported over in less than a year.

Anyway, as the above poster stated, you can clearly see where CGI and real gameplay are separated. Here hair is a big give away, along with clipping issues with her weapon going through monsters during attacks.

That doesn't really say anything about the capabilities of the PS3. You can make something that looks like crap on any system.

Guess What! Final Fantasy XIII's still very much a PLAYSTATION 3 exclusive!

Gamespot @ Square Enix Party 2007 Mega Theater

Quote:
After the logo for Fabula Nova Crystallis--the overarching name for all Final Fantasy XII games--flashed on the screen, a new trailer for Final Fantasy XIII began. The trailer featured a woman named Lightning as she dispatched a series of opponents without breaking a virtual sweat. Afterwards, her companion--a blond man on a motorcycle--summoned a spirit--who looked like a biomechanical version of the Indian deity Shiva--from a crystal, before the trailer ended with a giant PlayStation 3 logo.
Not quite the detailed account I was hoping for, but this is the first thing I've read about the Mega Theater.

Umm..hel-lo gamespot? Blu-ray disc is an open format, not a proprietary. Dunces.

Worst of all, there's no email address on that site anywhere to tell the webmaster that they're wrong.

Brian Ekberg's got the skills. A proper description of the new expanded FFXIII trailer with funky Shiva-motorcycle summoning.

And Versus XIII - Still CG-only.
