Default Amazon's "A League of Their Own" - Starring Nick Offerman

Source: Variety

‘Parks and Recreation’ Fan-Favorite Nick Offerman Joins ‘A League of Their Own’ Cast
Monica Marie Zorrilla - June 30, 2021

Nick Offerman, star of “Parks and Recreation” and “The Great North,” has joined Amazon’s series adaptation of “A League of Their Own.”

Like the original 1992 Penny Marshall film from Sony’s Columbia Pictures, the hour-long series will tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. The show will also explore race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the League and outside of it.

Offerman will portray Casey “Dove” Porter, an ex-Cubs pitcher brought in to coach the Rockford Peaches, most famous because his forkball killed a dove in mid-air in the middle of a game. Described as inspiring and charismatic, Dove was thought to be the next big Major League Baseball star but blew his arm out after three years. Now he’s looking to make his comeback by making the Peaches into champions.

The series is co-created and executive produced by “Broad City” alum Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham, with Jacobson also starring. Other stars include Chanté Adams, Emmy nominee D’Arcy Carden, BAFTA winner Gbemisola Ikumelo, Roberta Colindrez, Kelly McCormack, and Priscilla Delgado, Molly Ephraim, Kate Berlant and Melanie Field.

“A League of Their Own” is produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television in association with Field Trip Productions. Along with Graham and Jacobson, Field Trip’s Hailey Wierengo executive produces. Jamie Babbit served as executive producer for and directed the pilot. Elizabeth Koe is a co-executive producer.

It hardly starred Nick Offerman. He is in 3 of the 8 episodes.

I liked it. The cast members were largely unknown to me, but they all created good, quirky characters. I love D'Arcy Carden in Barry, so it was fun to see her here too. I wasn't familiar with Abbi Jacobson, but she's adorable. I will have to check out Broad City. And who is Gbemisola Ikumelo? She's wonderful here as the comic book artist best friend of Max (Chanté Adams - also really good), an aspiring pitcher.

I haven't read anything negative, but EW had an article on how some people complain that the show is too queer. Too bad. If 98% of the film and TV shows released have no queer content, then there's plenty of other content for you if that's a problem.

The original movie was great. I’ll stick with that. Thanks though.

Struggled through the first episode. That was enough for me. Nice production values, but I hated pretty much every character. Next!

Okay, I'm 4 episodes in and don't think this is the League of their Own TV series I wanted. The first few eps I was confused if this was a re-creation of the movie or it's own thing. It's def it's own thing. I don't really care for the new characters like I did their movie "counterparts". I'm debating even finishing the season. I might do it if I have nothing else to watch, but I'm not in any rush to.

What I wished they did was to expand on the movie universe. That was so great, I really don't care about a retelling set in the same time period, same team with different characters. They should have told the story from the Belles, who the Peaches met win the World Series and lost. Kit got traded to them after her tiff with Dottie. Re-cast those characters and tell their story. There was also other years/stories they could have focused on.

Just seems like a wasted opportunity to me and not the direction I would have taken.

Why would anyone bother going through this series when there's a movie that does the job better and faster with just two hours?

I wondered this too. The movie is a classic. Great casting, the right amount of comedy and heart and just tells a good story.

This new show appears to just be using the concept/ideas of the film as a backdrop to, well, you know. Make some statement or whatever. Best of luck with it.

Love the movie, which is why I thought I would give this a try. But nope, the feel of the show just doesn't work for me. Not my cup of tea.
