Default Please help with movie suggestions

Hey there Blu-ray community. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I have been a frequent reader of the forums here the past few years but rarely ever post. Recently I saw the movie The Grand Seduction and loved it. I did not really know what to expect from it, but picked it up because a friend mentioned it when I told him I was a fan of Taylor Kitsch.

It was such a pleasure to transition from the typical action / horror / gross comedy movies that I watched to this type of film. The thing that attracted me to it was the beautiful cinematography and backdrop of New Foundland and the subtle but powerful performances. I recently saw About Time too and the backdrop of Cornwall, England was beautiful. The last example is the Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The scenery and variety of landscapes really made that movie for me.

I would love for some recommendations of movies that are similar to the three I mentioned. There are those movies that sticks to you somehow, and it's hard to explain and the Grand Seduction really did that to me. Can't stop thinking about how much I enjoyed it. People have mentioned The Grand Budapest Hotel, will probably check that out next.

Thanks for reading and any input is greatly appreciated!

I've actually been meaning to take the time to watch it again for about two weeks now, but I just haven't had the opportunity. But I'll get there!

This is a movie that I'm extremely fond of:

It's a fabulous remake - much of the dialogue in English - that was shot in many beautiful locales around Seattle, Washington.

Not 100% if this is what you might be looking for, but definitely worth looking into is Michelangelo Antonioni's "Modern Malaise Trilogy" made up of L'Avventura, L'Eclisse, and La Notte.

If nothing else, Antonioni was a master of mood, atmosphere, and spectacular black and white (in these films, anyways) cinematography. But they are definitely films about loneliness, the vast distances between people even while they are speaking to one and other, and the general "missing elements" of the human condition.

So, if that sounds like your thing ...

How come these aren't all out on Blu-ray or better a Blu-ray box set. Is the reason there is no box set is that WB owns the first two and the third is owned by Columbia (Sony)?

Probably.

I want a SUPER-DUPER-MAXED-OUT box set of these. They deserve it. Unfortunately I have a feeling that we're not ever going to see a box set of any kind, let alone what I'm talking about.

We need Criterion on the case.

Probably the most similar to the three you mentioned, it's a film set Swansea in Wales. It's very funny and very sweet without being sentimental. It's about a kid who is trying to balance his first relationship out with the fact that his parents are looking like they're going to break up. It's a film that shot into my favourites so it comes highly recommended.

If you liked Brendan Gleeson from Grand Seduction, then this is a must see. Pitch black comedy about a Priest in an isolated town in Ireland who is threatened with being murdered within a week has to find out who the culprit is and what he must do about it, whilst also tending to the rest of the towns lost souls. I won't say it's particularly uplifting, but I laughed a lot and even had a few tears at the end, worth mentioning if you like this it'll be worth watching In Bruges and The Guard as well, both are not quite as affecting, but they are funnier and equally well made and worth watching. Currently my favourite film of the year behind Boyhood.

Very odd comedy that's also set in Ireland that is also one of my favourites this year, about a failing song writer, played by Domhall Gleeson from About Time, who gets the opportunity to help play bass for a band helmed by the enigmatic Frank. As he begins to learn about the messed up band members, he begins to further exploit them. It's very funny and I can guarantee that you'll see nothing else really like it, and it has a really phenomenal ending.

Also, if you're going to watch the Before series, remember to leave breaks after each film, don't marathon them. Leave some distance and create ideas around the characters so when you return to them you can see how they've grown and changed.

This is one of my favorite John Wayne movies, to me it is a toss up between this and The Searchers that John Wayne truly deserved an oscar for. This is just a good fun movie with great performances, cinematography and the best teaming of The Duke with Maureen O'Hara, who is absolutely radiant. Everyone involved is at their best.

After reading the premise for the Calvary I immediately picked it up during lunch break. Already have a solid list already and thank you all again.
