Make them write it under the limit. Or use Planetaxel.com. In Norway the limit is circa 21 GBP. Too low. I haven`t payed custom duties for years.

Either make sure they're under £18 or as the above said, use planetaxel.com. They're exempt from customs charges and offer pretty good prices on their discs.

Did they really? In all honesty, I haven't imported anything from anywhere in years that could hit customs so I really wouldn't know but it wouldn't surprise me if they had changed it.

It is due to change again very soon. From April 1st the threshold will be £0 for items imported from the Channel Islands

They ship from their warehouse in Los Angeles but it gets sent to their plants within Europe and then off to it's destination, which is how they get around customs.

Either use a service which lets you pay upfront (Amazon offer expedited shipping) to avoid a trip to your local sorting office, use a service that ships from within the UK or keep below the ridiculously low £15 limit.

The first two options usually cost more though.

Get someone abroad to buy the stuff on your behalf and package it with a generic box/packet. Lie your arse off by stating they are DVD's at $4 a pop.

Exactly what I had to do when I won The Shawshank Redemption digibook from a seller in the States as any package assessed by HM Revenue and Customs as being liable for custom charges will also incur a Royal Mail handling fee of £8...ouch!

So let's say I am after something from Amazon USA for $21.49... Do I get slammed with customs? I am thinking I won't, but need clarity first.

No. 21.49 USD = 13.4666 GBP. 15 is the limit.
