Can brand new disks come with nasty finger smudges on the disks and greasy strips/marks on the inside and outside of the case? I figure they can if the packagers are filthy but wanted to hear others opinions...

I saw some nightmarish things on new discs in the dvd days, my favorite was peanut butter! How a new dvd got peanut butter on it is beyond me, I would think the packaging would be done by machines, not slobs.
I have yet to see a truly horrible new BD, nary even a fingerprint or dust spec. |

On the outside, maybe. However...the inside would mean only one thing to me: it was opened and resealed. Besides media manufacturing plants generally do not really touch the actual disc media, it's all pretty automated. There are videos on YouTube showing the process.
I've never had a problem with a new blu-ray, only used. |

Wow! What was the disc? I suppose it's true some retailers may repackage unsold stock into double features. I figured most discs are packaged via an automated system. At the local Gamestop here, it's their policy to break seal on all new games and then keep the disc in a separate sleeve until they sell it. Then they return it to an original case. It's idiotic and the reason I never purchase there anymore. To me, once the seal is broken it's no longer new and shouldn't be sold as such. An employee even admitted to me that they take new games home and play them themselves but since they consider themselves "professionals" the discs are not "used". I don't think I've ever experienced this with a movie however.

![]() I was hoping this thread would morph into funny WTF stories and not be taken as another "first world problems" thing, glad to see others feeling the same. ![]() That said, I wish my original post was a joke, but is the sad truth. |

Parents over last 40+ years have forgot to teach their kids pride in their work, to do things right and not be sloppy. So now those kids had kids and things (right way to do things) is getting lost and they do crap anyway they want at the expense of others. When you buy brand new, it best not have 1 smudge or 1 problem. |

The art work was buckled too, like it had been pulled out and put back in. I couldn't believe the amount of greasy smudges "inside" the case. I suspect it was a repackage passed off as new. One reason I opened this thread was to suss out if these things are manually packaged together by hand (case, disk, artwork) or if it is automated. |

Long time ago, but I remember buying a brand new DVD of the movie Tamara from Wal-Mart on release week. Got it home, opened it up, and the disc was covered with finger prints and scuffs. It played fine, so I didn't bother returning it, but it was pretty annoying.
I think Veronica Mars: Season 2 was another, purchased brand new on release week. 5 of the discs were perfect, but one of them (I think disc 3 or 4?) was all marked up. Played fine though, so again, didn't bother returning. I think both of those were around the same time, so not long after that I just stopped looking at the bottom of new discs. As long as they play fine, then out of sight, out of mind. It would just bug me knowing about it, so it's better to not know. They go right from the case to the player, and vice versa. I do check the surface of used movies though, usually wipe them off with a cloth. Once I do that, I never look at the surface again. |

I've had several like this over the years. My DVD disc of the 3D set of The Lego Movie had a large finger smudge right on the front by the hub. The BD and 3D BD were untouched though.

You'd be surprised how many retailers have their own shrinkwrapping equipment. Probably most of them. I know for a fact a smaller webstore kept re-wrapping them, probably watched them before sending them off, the evidence was overwhelming (pieces of the old shrinkwrap still stuck to the spine lol).
