United Kingdom Calvary (11th August 2014)

Currently up for £24.99 but it'll likely go down in price soon.

If you haven't seen it yet, then I recommend a blind buy is pretty safe bet, this is currently my favourite film of the year.

It's below Under the Skin for me but it's probably my second favourite film of the year so far. Gleeson is fantastic (as are the supporting cast) and it's got an incredibly sharp script, by turns hilarious and devastating.

Currently my 13th favourite (or 10th if you don't count films that haven't had UK releases yet) film of the year so far - though it could move up upon repeat viewings, probably being the best film set in and about Ireland that I've ever seen.

Only £14.99 pre-ordered from HMV I noticed today (and reserved a copy for myself). Will likely be around £12.99-£14.99 on release and later in the 2 for £25 offer as most commercial new releases sell for these days.

Ah that's good, was thinking it wasn't going to get one. It will look nice next to some of my other flicks.

Is this and The Raid 2 going for £12.99 like most the other eOne films?

I think so, and will likely go to £14.99 or 2 for £25 after a week or two. I didn't actually upgrade the first film so might get the double set as the artwork is pretty cool on that one (£16.99 if you were interested).

If I pre-order this for £17.25 it is on amazon, and it drops to £13 on release day, when I receive it, will amazon refund me the difference?

I don't understand why Amazon seemingly do this all the time with Blu-ray now. It can't be good for preorders to wait until the release date to put up a sensible price.

It can on the odd occasion go the other way,I was going to pre-order What's Eating Gilbert Grape and then decided I'd wait a while until it dropped to a tenner but instead jumped up to double that.

Guaranteed Gilbert Grape will be in a multibuy at some point (HMV or Amazon)...gonna wait for that myself. Calvary I'm gonna wait for too - I loved the film but can tell it'll fall in price sometime in the next 6 months and I'll pick it up then.

I saw Calvary in theatre recently. Didn't know what to expect. I went for Brendan Gleeson and, for me, that's his best part since Boorman's The General. What an actor. This is an unexpected gem. I liked The Guard from the same director, again with Gleeson, but this one resonates still as I'm writing this. I'll gladly buy it.

I watched this at the Dublin Film Festival back in Feb and absolutely hated it.
I enjoyed The Guard and love Brendan Gleeson so was expecting great things but thought it was awful.
Gleeson is great and the film is beautifully shot but it's packed with the most horribly grotesque caricatures I've ever seen in a film.
Nothing feels real and the acting (Gleeson aside) is pretty abysmal.
It's (many) defenders seem to think it offers some deep insight into the Irish psyche and the many issues Ireland has recently faced (financial / loss of faith in church) but the writer/director has said in interviews that it's NOT about Ireland and could just have easily been set in Spain or France.

I honestly can't remember the last time I have so passionately disagreed with the critics over a film. Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky.

He's right, it's not about Ireland, the ideas and themes in the film are pretty universal, and I think it wraps up a lot in the tiny window the film offers.

Hey guys,

How long are the interviews on this release? I just picked up the Region A US disc from Fox, and that has a 21-minute Making of, some promo featurettes running about a dozen minutes, and a photo galley.

So, if the UK interviews are substantial, I may pick that release up as well.

Not worth the upgrade imo. The interviews are very short. Probably EPK stuff...
great movie though
