Quote:
An exploding industry without rules! Direct to-video madness! VHS vs. Beta! In the 1980s, videotape changed the world and laid the foundation for modern media culture. REWIND THIS! traces the rise and fall of VHS from its heyday as the mainstream home video format to its current status as a nostalgic relic and prize to collectors who still cherish it. Featuring interviews with both filmmakers and enthusiasts from the VHS era, including Troma legend Lloyd Kaufman, indie auteur Atom Egoyan, and Hobo with a Shotgun filmmaker Jason Eisener, REWIND THIS! is the definitive story of the format that came to be synonymous with the home video revolution. So gather up your friends and start the pizza party – just make sure to have your tapes back on time.

Bonus Features
Packed with extras, including original animations, a special music video, and over an hour of bonus interview footage on laserdisc, remix culture, video panic and more!

Pardon me for resurfacing this 5-year old thread, but I just watched this documentary on the special features on the German blu-ray of Mandy. I thought it was really entertaining and insightful. Does anyone here still collect VHS of stuff that hasn't made it's way to DVD, much less blu-ray?

I have just about every format of the past and present, and most in both NTSC and PAL variants as well. Lately been getting VHD videodiscs from Japan and PAL laserdiscs now that I can play those.

I just saw Rewind This! for the first time. Even though I don't like VHS, this was an excellent documentary. I grew up with VHS tapes & hate the format with a passion (even before DVD came around). And, it's baffling that some people still collect these & even prefer them to far superior formats like DVD/Blu, etc. What's especially interesting is that many of these collectors weren't even born when VHS was initially popular. Go figure.

For the most part, if a film/TV show is not available on DVD/Blu, you can still typically find streams of this online - so that you won't need to keep the VHS tapes of this material.

I do disagree completely that VHS tapes are more durable than DVD's/Blu's. Yes, DVD's are prone to scratching/disk rot in some cases; Blu's can scratch, but to a lesser extent. But, VHS tapes could really screw up if the VCR "ate" the tape, which would ruin both the tape and the player. Plus, a VHS tape PQ's degraded over time; unlike DVD/Blu PQ - which - if they don't scratch or get Disk rot (which is admittedly rare) stay the same over the years.
