Default Watch first or buy first? Where do you stand and why?

I was wondering how some of you accumulate your BD collection. When I committed to blu ray I told myself I would watch every movie before making a decision to purchase. Now that I'm two weeks into my collection, I'm considering even watching movies that I've seen before on blu-ray because I haven't been too impressed with the hi def transfers of some of the movies I've seen so far. I've also been using the reviews here and at hidef digest as a tool to determine whether a movie I've seen before and enjoyed should be added to my collection. Is what I'm doing cost effective? Do some of you take all of this into consideration as well before purchasing? If not, why?

same, usually

recently i've bought a couple titles blind, mostly anime/animation (Tekkon Kinkreet, Doc Strange, Paprika) mostly to support anime on the format. So far I havent regretted a purchase.

But 98% of the time, only movies I know I like.

Well I usually buy the movie first but, if it's a plain movie like License to Wed I will watch it first and then decide to go buy it. Hope you guys and girls know what I am talking about.

if its a new release, theres no reason not to buy the bd version.

for the older titles, if its a must have, again..i buy right away. if its just so-so on my list of must haves, i check reviews out

I buy first always, that way I am sure to watch it at least once rather than it sitting on my cabinet for ages.

If I have the money left over to spend on Blurays, I'll pretty much buy anything even if I haven't seen it yet....

I just want content in HD to watch, and I want as much of it as I can get without having to start selling kids of my wife's body to pay the bills...

Granted, I always get what I have seen an what I want before I make a blind purchase, but I have purchased a lot of movies that I have never seen before on Bluray just for the sake of owning them...

I like people to enjoy themselves when they are a guest in my house, so I like to have a wide variety of movies for people that are company to choose from...

Also, as this war gets more and more stalemated, it seems that both of these formats might become niche players so I buy as much as I can on Blu while this stuff is still widely available.

I'll buy based on solid reviews. I don't rent movies. I like to own things and renting seems pointless considering the low cost of movies.

I also like to collect. Buying 2-3 movies isn't going to put me in the poor house.

If I hear about a movie that sounds interesting I'll buy it. This is what I did with Black Book.

And yes, in time I'm sure I'll end up with a collection that include "what the hell was I thinking" movies like Black Knight, but that's life.

I usually read reviews and ask friends that know what type of movie I like they're opinion without them telling me the plot.

I use to take this into account when I was collecting DVD's. I want to do the same with BD as well. Maybe add some more comedy to the collection, something that was lacking in my dvd collection.

I'm a firm believer of only buying movies I really like and will watch over and over. If I don't know anything about a flick and/or haven't seen something before then it's an automatic rental.

I buy what I know I like and have seen before. Stuff I will watch over and over again.

There are some movies I have bought blind due to recommendations and reviews - Ratatouille & Meet The Robinsons.

I buy anything I think I might like someday! I still have 20+ titles I own but yet to watch. Funny thing is, I think I like to collect them as much as watching them. Every BOGO sale I get gitty. I need help.

This is rarely a concern for me as I go to the movies usually 2 or more times a week.
I see almost all movies that would interest me in the theater first.

Booya my Blu Brother! Same philosophy at my end... except the wife and kids thing. Not lucky enough to have been blessed with either of those yet.

I'll be getting my 100th BD next month. I'd say 45% of them are titles I've seen before, with the other 55% being blind buys.

Getting the movie channels aren't very convenient for me (even with a DVR) nor is renting, so I prefer to do the blind buys.

I did this with DVD, and my 300-500 (I stopped counting) collection is filled with some "stinkers", but I've regretted very few purchases. The only blind buy Blu-ray that I've seen so far that I'm disappointed with was "The Fountain" since I don't do drugs. ("The Break-Up" was my only HD DVD disappointment out of my 40).

Usually I stick to films that I know I will be glad to buy. "The Simpsons Movie" for instance is a blind purchase, as is POTC3 and HP5 as I enjoyed the first POTC movies (I still haven't gotten around to seeing 2) and the first three HP movies (I still haven't gotten around to seeing HP4... which is a good thing since the HP4 scenes on Warner's HD DVD demo scenes are fantastic).

Some movies I go out on a stretch for if I feel that my viewing experience will be enhanced enough by HD to condone the added expense versus borrowing a friend's copy, or catching on a DirecTV Freeview weekend. "Resident Evil: Extinction" and "Gone Baby Gone" being two good examples. "The Fountain" being a BAD one!

Other times, a sale will get my attention. Over the last few months, BOGO free sales have encouraged me to pick up "A Few Good Men", "Bram Stoker's Dracula", "Flyboys", "Black Book", "The Lives Of Others" that I might not have purchased at full price.

I buy every movie I can on blu. Unless it is a musical (excluding Rocky Horror and Across the Universe) or something that looks completely terrible to me. I just enjoy collecting....thats why I buy instead of rent.
