Default Hardest R rated movies

Lately I feel like we don't get nearly enough R rated movies. And when we do, they don't feel like they deserve their rating. They feel more like a hard PG-13 movie. So what are the hardest R rated movies of let's say the last 10-15 years?

Ones that come to my mind are:

Rambo (2008)
Evil Dead (2013)
Halloween II (2009)
The Devil's Recjects (2005)

Why do we need more hard R-rated movies? And, do you mean movies with graphic violence or explicit sexual content, or both?

Just movies that feel like an R. BvS Ultimate Edition is rated R yet it still feels very much like PG-13. So mostly graphic violence and/or a very dark tone.

Same reasons why we need heavier and heavier forms of music, or more potent forms of hard liquor, or anything else. Heavier s**t can be quite pleasing.

Okay, well, in that case...

American Psycho
Evil Dead
Grindhouse
Hostel
High Tension
Inside
Killer Joe
Martyrs
Requiem for a Dream

Saw franchise

...that's enough for me. I don't like graphic violence and gore in movies.

I thought of 12 Years a Slave when I saw your post. Certainly hard R in my book for the graphic violence.

Scorsese's had a few....Legend has it that he will often shoot harder than he plans to use to manipulate the ratings board, LOL. In case they give him an NC-17, he can go back and cut it like he wanted it to begin with and then they'll give him an R because he cut stuff, LOL.

"Taxi Driver" was considered very hard in its time. "Goodfellas", "Casino", and "The Wolf of Wall Street" all come to mind, as well.

Amazing the guy can still cause shock and controversy in his 70s.

Sure, I guess. But, the violence and gore in that film affects me differently. Because the violence is more realized, it actually happened, as opposed to the torture porn on display in films like Inside or Martyrs.

Interesting. To me, it's almost the opposite. The more realized the violence, the harder it is to sit through. But I can get through Hostel/Martyrs/Inside no problem.

Yes, I agree. The emotional impact is far greater. For some reason, I just don't consider that film a 'hard R.' But, that might just be my bias towards the film. I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!

I didn't even really see Hostel/Martyrs/Inside, because I watched the films through covered eyes.

Umm...okay.
Pretty sure both Killer Joe and Martyrs (the original) are unrated, but I'm not sure. They'd be NC-17 if they were rated.
