Default Saint Jack (1979) (Limited Edition)

Ask and you shall receive

SR have confirmed via FB that Saint Jack BD is in the works.

[Show spoiler]

I haven't watched it yet, but no movie featuring Ben Gazzara pimpin' and hustling can't be bad, right?

Seriously, this movie sounds like a potential "sleeper". I'm definitely looking forward to it

Interesting. It's not a bad little film. Saw it on VHS years ago, simply because I am a huge Bond fan and I heard George Lazenby was in it (he's in it for about five minutes near the very end).

As for Ben Gazzara pimpin' and hustling... well you can always pretend it's a prequel to the Big Lebowski - Jackie Treehorn The Early Days.

Next month you will see the BluRay release of SAINT JACK! Jack Flowers (Ben Gazzara, Husbands, Road House, Sicilian Connection ) is a street savvy American living in Singapore. And like all Americans, Jack has a dream... to open the best *****house in Singapore. Of course a *****house doesn't come easy. It takes a lot of moves and a lot of hustle. But as Jack always says "People make love for so many crazy reasons... why shouldn't money be one of them"? Two of the film’s best features are the terrific cinematography by the great Robby Müller ( Breaking the Waves ) and the top-notch cast that includes Denholm Elliott (Raiders of the Lost Ark ), Joss Ackland ( Lethal Weapon 2 ) and James Bond, 007 George Lazenby ( On Her Majesty’s Secret Service ). Legendary filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich ( Targets, Paper Moon ) co-starred, directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Howard Sackler ( Killer’s Kiss ) and Paul Theroux ( The Mosquito Coast ) – based on the novel by Theroux. Produced by the great Roger Corman ( X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes ).. Now see it for the first time in 16x9 widescreen from a brand new HD master from the original negatvies!

Typically no mention of whether or not it includes subtitles, even though it should be a given.

Instant buy for this underrated gem. So glad to see it's coming and especially with so many great features.

Wow! I kind of had the impression that by the time it finally got a good DVD, it sold so poorly that a Blu would never come. Excellent news! This is one of Bogdanovich's best.

Can someone confirm if it has subtitles or not?

It's one of my favorite films, but I'm not a native English speaker...

Thanks!

These dramas, unlike genre stuff, barely sell past 400 units, like GO TELL THE SPARTANS, and adding subtitles, as much as I would like to, would have added additional expense to the already high price for this.

Spartans barely sold 400? That's really sad cause it's an excellent movie.

yes, when a code red title like ACAPULCO GOLD outsells SPARTANS, I am convinced genre titles are the what most blu fans want, Im guessing?

Normally I only buy genre titles but I have Spartans a chance because of word of mouth on here and was not disappointed. Acapulco Gold on the other hand was one of the worst titles in Code Reds library, not as bad as Nightfall though, and it's a travesty that that has outsold Spartans.

In other news will Silent Scream and Humongous be up on Ronin this month?

The Mondo-Digital review raves about the new commentary track:

Quote:
Exclusive to the Blu-ray and pretty much worth picking up the disc all by itself (as if the improved a/v presentation weren't enough) is a new audio commentary by Ben Slater, author of the book Kinda Hot: The Making of Saint Jack in Singapore (which is going for insane amounts of money online), and he's a complete encyclopedia when it comes to this film with a staggering number of anecdotes about the locations, how the filmmakers worked around the Singapore authorities, and which locals were corralled to appear in bit parts throughout the film. Essential listening if you love the film and actually even more rewarding than the older director track.
