Default Anime in the U.S. ....

I find it pretty sad that American anime companies complain about poor sales due to fansubs when they can't even release anime with a high quality japanese audio track.

I've been looking at a bunch of anime, most of the japanese tracks are Dolby Digital 2.0 or 1.0, while english is Dobly Digital 5.1 or TrueHD.

Really? Everyone I know absolutely hates the english tracks. The entire cast they use for english cost about as much as one actor in the japanese tracks. Can anyone see a reason to buy these releases? Why spend more money on a blu-ray when it's mono or stereo for the better audio track?

Seems like anyone who wants quality japanese tracks has to import their blu-rays from Japan...

Default better subs

Also, somehow the font used in fan subs is so much better. When I see giant blocky yellow subs, I want to pull my hair out.

Not to mention most anime is still in 480p here... and most anime in Japan is on blu-ray now... Fansubs tend to be 720p.

I'm fine with the delayed blu-ray releases, but not including 2 high quality audio tracks when theres 50gigs to go around is a complete failure. Anime doesn't even need a high bitrate for video, they could easily do 4-5 episodes a disc with 2x TrueHD or DTS-HD tracks for each episodes.

If they really want people to buy anime than they should put more effort into their releases and at least match fansubs. Pirating should never be higher quality than a official release...

The reason that the Japanese audio tracks are in stereo 2.0 on some releases is because that's how they were originally recorded. If there was a surround track available they would put it on there. This is mostly true of older releases. Thats why there may be an English 5.1 track but only a 2.0 Japanese track. As for subtitle fonts, this is simply a limitation of the dvd format and there's nothing that can really be done about it. Bluray is capable of much higher resolution subtitle fonts than dvd. While some fonts fansub groups use may look pretty from 3 feet away on your computer screen, they are completely unreadable from 20 feet away on a television. I have seen instances where there will be three rows of text on the screen at once with not enough time to read it all. If you want to pay $100+ for a japanese bluray release that only contains one or two episodes of a series then go ahead, but I'm willing to wait a year or so until the american companies catch on and start releasing more of their titles on bluray.

I find it funny when people don't know what their talking about in regards to the English (UK, US, AUS) anime scene. If you would pay attention many anime are released in Japan with 2.0 tracks. If you really want to go and get the Japanese releases go right on ahead and you'll find out that not only will you be paying out the nose for those releases averaging around $50 to $80 per 2 episodes of any given series that's your prerogative and your money to waste. When you get in those JP releases you will also quickly find that mostly all of them are not English friendly in the slightest. So while you enjoy your overpriced non English friendly releases the rest of us will gladly wait and pay a fraction of the cost for the extra content provided in a English release and in the meantime instead of watching fansubs maybe go the legal route and actually support the English anime market by subscribing to a site like crunchyroll. You are one of the problems plaguing the English anime market by watching fansubs in the first place.

As for your comment on dubs I'm happy for probably the 3 people that you know that absolutely hate dubs. For many of us a dub is a luxury. I can't always sit down and read subtitles on everything that I watch and it's nice to occasionally be able to sit down and multitask with a anime on in the background and still be able to follow along with what's going on. Its also nice to be able to be immersed into the world of the series without having to concentrate on the subs. While watching with a dub I can get a true appreciation for the art work of a series or the action that's going on on screen and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that way.
