Default Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Well, I was just reading the Akira Blu-ray review (which reminded me I still have to watch the rest of that movie, only seen the first half or so of it) and it made me think of Avatar. It's not anime like Akira, but it's an anime-inspired American cartoon that I absolutely love. So I was wondering if anyone has seen if this show has any plans of being released on Blu-ray?

I was just thinking about the movies that are coming out (a trilogy directed by M. Night Shyamalan, in which the first one starts filming in March and releases in July 2010), so I would assume if they are coming to Blu-ray a movie tie-in release would make the most sense. But would they release all 3 at once (like in a box set or separately or something), or since each movie focuses on each individual Book (season), would we have to wait the 2 years between each movie for each season to come to Blu-ray? I think that'd be kind of ridiculous to wait 2 years between each release so I highly doubt that, but who knows?

I suppose the most likely course would be to release all 3 seasons in a box set in July 2010 or around there (to help promote the new movie), which I'd totally be fine with. The set could just have all the extras from the DVD seasons with some new BD-exclusives added in (though I would love tons of new extras, ideally, but that's not too likely I don't think). Though I suppose some interviews and/or behind the scenes stuff for the upcoming movie(s) would be added incentive to go see that when it hits theaters.

Well if they wanted to, they can go back to the drawing boards / cells (dunno the exact terms but ya) and make it fit for widescreen, showing more on the sides and all. Otherwise I don't mind a 4:3 1080p picture quality. And the bigger your widescreen TV, the more you won't mind a 4:3 picture. Watching the DVD upscaled has its minor flaws but it's somewhat distracting. I can't really say what exactly 'cause I dunno how to describe them.

Seriously this series deserves a blu-ray release and a lossless 5.1 surround sound treatment.

We only have Book 1 on DVD but man before pitching in on the other 2 books DVD sets, I want to know for sure if they're gonna make this series go blu. I kinda don't think they would. A re-release collectors edition of Book 1 seems to be the only thing to tie-in with the movie release.

Thumbs up Blu ray for Avatar the anime series

I personally think that the creators and editors can make a 16:9 aspect ratio respecting the anime series and enough people will buy it for a fair price.

I don't know if my vote matters, but A: TLA is the best western animated show to ever grace television in my humble opinion. It absolutely deserves a spiffy blu ray release both for its excellent animation quality, and for it spectacular content.

Also, for the record, it's not anime; a) it was made by two [genius] Western (non-Japanese) dudes and b) it was sent over seas to be animated in Korea, not Japan.

Not that that is a good or bad thing, but some people are very averse to anime. The show's highly influenced by everything from Asian to Inuit culture.

If you haven't seen the show, go see it. If you only know The Last Airbender film, please pretend you've never heard of the movie, then go watch the show... Even the creators of the series like to pretend the film was never made. Avatar's on Netflix, it's for all ages (some really dark stuff in some of the episodes), and it's well-worth your time. Thank me later.

Because of the horrendous film adaptation, i doubt we will ever see a Blu Ray release of this awesome show which is a damn shame... That, my friends, is yet another reason to despise that movie!

Actually, I wouldn't doubt seeing this this year or next year, to coincede with a release of the reboot/sequel series.

I say there's a more likelihood of The Legend of Korra being released, as it's produced in HD. However, A:TLA wasn't, so a Blu release is really unlikely (though I really would love it!).

Ya I was gonna say that, though I'm sure all that digital data was drawn in more than 1080p. And even if it does show up on blu-ray, I think it'll be mastered in 1080i because the frame rate is inconsistent. The drawings and most parts are in 24fps but scenes where the camera pans suggests it's more than that.

It'd be cool if they one day remaster the entire series under 24 frames per second though - that and 5.1 surround. The Legend of Korra seems to be consistent with the 24.

I know this thread is pretty old but has anyone found out anything about a bluray release for the whole series of TLA?

If there was, there'd be a main thread about it.

But since the show was only animated in standard definition, it's never going to happen.
