Default Is it worth it?

My tv can only support 720p and 1080i. Is it worth getting a blu-ray player? Will there still be a worthwhile difference from a normal dvd?

Yea I mean 1080i is High Definition just not "full" HD. TV shows are broadcast in it so that gives you an idea how they will look (but better than tv shows).

Just in case there is any doubt, the correct answer to the OP is "yes."

Especially when it's a poor transfer. I had Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries on a separate SD from the box set (not realizing that the miniseries is included in the box set of Season 1). It was awful, awful, awful, even upconverted. However, once I opened up Season 1 to begin watching, it was quite obvious that they'd done a much better job with the PQ in the SD Season 1 set. Needless to say, I'm giving away the separate SD of the BG Miniseries.

I'm hoping that Universal is delaying the release of Season 3 until after the first of the year, and the CES, so they can announce the release of it in Blu-ray. (A guy can hope, can't he?)

Well if you where to believe most hd dvd owners (laughs sarcastically) 1080i is all you need.
Seriously now yes it will look amazing and the day you do get a 1080p tv well your player will be there all happy waiting for you because it isn't outdated.

one more thing. The ps3 (and im guessing most other blu-ray players) have hdmi out. Is there any way to get the sound from the ps3 to go through my sound system. The inputs on my sound system are the old composite style (red and white) and optical. There is another set of composite inputs saying tv in. Im guessing that if i connected the tv to the system i would get sound that way?

Yes, PS3 can also handle both the old composite and optical audio connection. You should be good with PS3. Btw, PS3 comes with composite cable when you buy it....

I know that it comes with the composite cable. I want to connect it to my TV with the hdmi so i wasn't sure about the sound. I would just get the component cables but i cant as i am using my 360 via component

Run HDMI out of your PS3 to your TV. Run an optical cable out of your PS3 and into your receiver. You'll have the best picture and the 2nd best sound configuration.

BTW, though I agree that 1080p should be the goal, 1080i blu-rays look amazing. It isn't even comparable to the compressed, choppy stuff you get from broadcast HD channels.

If your TV can handle HDMI then you should get both picture and audio. Your audio will not be the best but you should be okay. I'm confuse with your question, component cables (red, green and blue) are only video. The composite (red and white) I was talking about was for audio only, the yellow (for video), because I thought you were asking about the audio input connection to your audio system.

I have a similar question so I may as well ask it here. I don't have my setup complete yet, and I also have a ps3 and 360. So after running the optical cable from the ps3 to the reciever, then connecting the hdmi from the ps3 to the tv, do I have to run anything from the tv to the reciever?

Same deal with the 360, except I won't be using HDMI I'll be using component.

Also, my tv has no optical inputs, if that matters.

ALthough 1080p is the best, and contrary to what some believe, you CAN see the difference in very large TVs during action scenes. However, the difference is not huge between 1080p and 1080i in most of what you watch.

The difference between 1080i and standard DVDs IS huge, very very huge. IN fact, I bet once you start watching blu-ray movies for a short while, say a few weeks or a month of solid blockbuster rentals, then pop in your standard DVD's you will hate to ever again watch SD-DVD

Thats how I am, and I didn't believe my friends until I had it.

I only have a tv that supports 720p/1080i and Blu-ray is a great improvement.
I cant even hardly watch my 250+ DVD collection anymore because Blu-ray is that great. If I were you I would go with the PS3 for your Blu-ray player.

32" VIZIO 720p/1080i
80gb PS3 / Blu-ray player
4 PS3 games / 4 Blu-ray discs soon to own more
