None of the sites I would normally order a Japanese disc from list this as having English subs yet, but I hope that they are going to be on the disc and the listings just aren't complete yet. I'm pretty sure all of the Office Kitano dvd and blu-ray releases have been English friendly.

The rights for this film are sold in a number of territories. This is most likely the reason why. I would be very surprised if we do not see U.S. and UK releases in 2013.

English subs according to yesasia. All Kitano releases I've bought from Bandai Visual (been importing Kitano's stuff from Japan since Zatoichi) have had English subtitles, so this is not surprising, but it's nice to have it confirmed.

Sweet, I will have to order it. Thanks for the update. Beat Takeshi is my favorite director -- I keep hoping that Criterion will release Hanabi since the US dvd is pretty poor.

Can confirm English subs and a strong transfer. The disc is region free (it plays on my Region B player). The movie itself is a hoot, and should please every fan of the original. Kitano delivers once again!

It was the standard edition - maybe that was the problem. I really did not want to pay for the limited edition. I might try to place the order again for the limited edition

It seems I forgot to post this. A review I spotted of the new Magnolia US Blu-ray jogged my memory.

The Magnolia US BD is a BD-25 (specs are here) with lesser bitrates for PQ and AQ. It does contain a 62-minutes Making of featurette (in 480i) with English subtitles, so it is obviously the way to go for extra material.

As regards this Japanese BD from Bandai Visual:

English subtitles are for the main feature only. The only extras on the single-disc Blu-ray are trailers, while the Limited Edition presents extras on an accompanying DVD, apparently without English subtitles.

The film begins automatically after studio logos.
