Slipcovers are Out of Print on Day 1. However, it may take months or even years for all of the stock to sell out depending on the popularity of a movie.

Having said that, Disney slipcovers disappear quickly now. At my local Best Buy, all copies of Guardians of the Galaxy 3D are already slipless.

Maleficent is the same way now. Golly. So is Snowpiercer.

Actually, Barnes and Noble gets rid of slipcovers before sending BDs to stores.

I never understood that. That is one of the reasons I never bought new releases from them to begin with. That and their ridiculously high price point of course. Than again, they specialize in books, not movies. I have seen slips on some in there, but most of their new releases are slipless from day one.

Well, think about it in terms of quantity. If you have 100,000 copies being shipped to stores and shipping is based on weight and dimensions, 100,000 slipcovers would add both a bunch of weight AND take up a bunch more space.

100,000 is by no means an accurate representation of actual quantities. It was used simply for conceptual explanation of the idea.

Yes. There is an exact date where they discontinue slipcovers. It is the exact date that the last one is printed. And that date is sometime before the retail release date of the Blu-ray itself.

Unfortunately there is no way to determine(with 100% accuracy) if a given BD release would arrive, from Amazon, with a slipcover - post release day.
Obviously the closer to release date, it's ordered, the better the chance.
I used to think that when Amazon changed their product image from a slipcovered BD to a just the amaray, that it was their way of saying "we are out of slips for this release", but I've disproved that, many times, both ways.
Best advice I can give you, short of just rolling the dice, monitor the thread of the slipcovered release you're thinking about getting and see if someone else ordered it from Amazon and how it arrived for them.

I've ordered 2 copies of the same thing and received 1 with and 1 without in the same mailer on preorders. Cowboy bebop was the latest to arrive in such a way.

That obviously means that you keep getting the last slipcover in the warehouse for those shipments! 😝

That's how I got The Fog Collectors Edition with the slip.

Think how silly that sounds. Does Amazon or Best Buy manufacture the product? No. The studios manufacture the product and send it to Amazon and BB and any other retailer. Do you think Amazon rips the slipcases off and tosses them after some date? No.

So they don't have slips when the inventory that comes in doesn't have slips.

But having said that, you don't know how well they manage inventory and whether they rotate the stock. Ideally, when new inventory comes in, that new inventory is put behind the old inventory so that the old inventory goes out first. Obviously that matters a lot with food. It matters far less with media. So it's possible when replacement stock comes in, it comes in without a slipcover, but then they run out of that and the old stock behind it does have a slipcover (if they don't rotate the stock).

So in the end, you never know. But if you see a case where Amazon says it's out of stock and then they have stock again, there's a pretty good chance that new stock will be without a slipcover. But again, you never really know for sure.

There have been some limited edition boxed sets that industry insiders advised me to purchase quickly because they were soon going to be gone. So I rushed to buy them (several years ago) and you know what? Everyone still has inventory two years later and they're a lot less expensive now.
