Default Blu-ray owns HD-DVD again... during THEIR Bogo week!!

The Blu-ray support has been nothing less than awesome these past few weeks. Keep up the great work everyone!

http://www.n4g.com/tech/News-88819.aspx

"Nielsen VideoScan data for the week shows 72.6% of high-definition discs purchased by consumers were Blu-ray and just 27.4% were HD DVD. HD DVD players have been selling for as little as $98, one-fourth the lowest street price for a Blu-ray player."

What is even more astonishing is that during this week, the HD-DVD group had a BOGO running on Amazon as well as some retailers.

GO BLU!

Hopefully with consumers showing consistent preference for Blu-ray, it will help sway the likes of Universal and Weinstein into releasing their content on Blu-ray.

Here's to Blu!

If the number 72% is true, that would be awesome! since HD DVD had a BOGOF that week AND of course the "mass" of cheap 1080i Half HD Player wich HD DVD have sold the last weeks!

It seems those cheap half HD players wont have any impact at all!
Numbers speak for them self!

I would laugh but it's so sad for the suckers that bought HD DVD.

Oh well, They could have made the right choice to begin with so I guess I don't feel bad for them anyway.

I can imagine what it would be like to get a HD DVD player for X-mass by some uninformed parent or something. That's a sad thought. Very Sad.

This is like the Sugar Ray Leonard vs Roberto Duran fight; I keep waiting to hear the words "no mas."

That's true. They had a BOGO week, and yet BLU-RAY has some of the best numbers yet!
It's over! The war must end! Blu-ray has won!

I'm going to round up on this one. The number is essentially 73:27. Just about a 3:1 trouncing. Why is this silly format war still alive?

Hopefully what we are seeing is the second-wave of the PS3 effect that we saw last year around this same time (a bit later, because of PS3 shortages) that surged BD ahead of HD-DVD. Hard to believe, but remember that HD-DVD was actually AHEAD at one time, and BOY were the HD-DVD fans smug about that!

But then the first wave of PS3 buyers hit the shelves and this massive tide swept up the HD-DVDs small numbers and never looked back, as many of us predicted.

Now that PS3 is $399 and there is ample supply, and Sony is making good steps to make sure that PS3 owners know they have a damn good movie player in their hands, I think we're starting to see a similar broad-based push for more sales across the board (not just single-title hit-driven).

Great news - hopefully this wave, unlike the last one, will be enough to wash HD-DVD away for good.

The Wii? It is not a "Cheap" console, it is JUST a console and nothing else making it inexpensive. It is actually a very cool console and is outselling all the others... the software is selling well too, I fail to see how you are comparing cheap A2 players to the Wii. It doesn't work.

I wonder how many Wii owners also own a PS3 or Xbox 360.

The Xbo360 Core user is the equivalent of the A2. It's the cheapest option and usually the bastion for libertarian anti-Sony AVS fanboys.

The only comparison is that the some critics of blu-ray are similar to those who bashed the PS3, and therefore purchased the A-2 and a Wii. Much more limited than the 360 Core user who went out and bought the HD DUD attachment.

The Wii is a cheap console, in that Nintendo really limited the graphics by only overclocking the Gamecube CPU and putting in some Ram. I like the console for what it does, but Nintendo vested all its R&D into the controller, not the console itself.

Me, but not because of any format. i don't own an XBOX cause it is a waste of money and I don't care for most of the games on it.
I have the Wii cause we could afford it and (more importantly) my wife loves Zelda.
So by being inexpensive and simple, they can assure people will buy their console even if they buy another one as well.

Sorry to rain on the parade. While all this is good news, I would refrain from a victory dance just yet.

Remember in Transformers when they shot the tail off that Decepticon in the dessert, but it continued to live? HD DVD is a little like that. You need to cut the head off and watch it mouth the words, "30GB is enough" before it finally dies.

that is a strange analogy, but I agree. Even though I am confident that Blu has already won in the world market, HD-DVD is still around and needs to die!
I think it is a matter of time, but hopefully in 2008, it will die.

I know one family: my daughter and son-in-law with their two teenage children. They have Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3. But then he works in that industry and needs access to all three (as well as many of the older models - and PC/Mac games with systems to support them) so all three are a tax write off.
