Yes Samurai Champloo is upscaled. There's been discussion about it in the sticky anime thread at the top of this forum. A number of anime releases have been upscales, whereas others are not - at least companies seem to be forthcoming with which are which so you can choose which to invest in if you don't want upscales.

Well I guess this makes me a little less mad about buying the DVD rerelease. Is the audio better on the BDs tho?

Samurai Champloo was most likely not animated in HD, and since it was digitally animated there most likely aren't HD masters. Shows that were cel animated would allow for creating HD masters (with the film copy of it), however that will not likely happen unless a Japanese Blu-ray is released for a show animated that way. Look for most shows 2005 or so and earlier to be upscales unless otherwise stated.

Considering I don't own the series (just 1st DVD) I am definitely picking this up. I imagine a high quality processed upscale will look better than a real time upscale from a player. Plus we get BD discs and HD audio. Worth a buy for me at least

Yeah, all the Digital Animation from 2000 to Today that are animated in NTSC/TV realms are stuck. I think this had to be the worst idea even since the cheap video camera came out in the 1980's and they all shoot the TV serie with those.

Example here is The Simpsons (until last year), Family Guy, American Dad etc..

The DVD would be better picture quality because they ran filters that slightly washed out the detail on the Blu-ray. That being said, there isn't a HUGE difference between the two, and the audio is better quality on the Blu-ray.

I hope you're not basing this assumption purely on those screenshots.

As of right now, I don't have anything to go by aside from the screenshots provided for the Blu-ray. As for the DVDs, I've seen them upscaled via my PS3 and the quality of those look quite nice upscale in that fashion. I have Burst Angel on Blu-ray and previously had it on DVD, the only reason I consider Burst Angel an upgrade is because the encoding on the DVDs were not so great.

Where did these screenshots come from? I'm just curious as to how this person obtained a copy since it hasn't been released yet. It hasn't been reviewed by any of the major sites which would suggest that advanced copies haven't been distributed. It looks to me like the bogus screenshot comparisons you see on youtube where they alter the image contrast to make it look like two different screenshots.

I don't know how you can like the dvd screen shots over the blu ray , when I look at the screen shots, the dvd has this awful gamma correction , causing to alter the original content

I'm another that's still buying anyway. Upscale is still a nice upgrade for me personally. I like the screenshots.

And I wouldnt have this release make you cancel your Basilisk order. A while back someone had a list of confirmed upscales and confirmed HD releases, and I'm 905 sure Baislisk was on the true HD list.

Champloo wasn't animated in HD so this is of course an upscale. However those Blu-Rays are a hell of a lot better than the DVDs and we get HD Audio, so I don't know why everyone is complaing.

A lot of web retailers including Right Stuf have been shipping this for weeks.

You do realize the mouse over the picture is the DVD right? The Blu-ray is the one that appears to be modified the most. I could use the DVD and recreate the overfiltered upscale myself...really the thing that bugs me the most is the washed out colors and the removal of the film grain that had be put in intentionally by the creators.

As I stated in the stickied anime thread, there's no way I'm buying this now. Funimation really needs to stop with the DNR/filtering that they apply to their upscaled Blu-rays. The point of Blu-ray is to show the picture as it was intended, not to tweak it by removing intentional grain and blurring out detail.

I'm straight up never going to buy an upscaled Blu-ray from Funimation until they stop with the unnecessary DNR. Luckily, they don't do this to their actual HD shows on Blu-ray so those are okay.

It was assumed that Basilisk was done in HD, however a poster over on the AoD boards confirmed that it's an upscale with the same DNR/filtering crap that Champloo has. http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost....9&postcount=20

Yes I do realize when you have the mouse cursor over the picture it's the dvd version, it's look awful, gamma issue , you can tell with the shadowing, looks blurry, gives me a headache, on the blu ray, colors look rich, the shadowing looks great, in focus. I guess eye of the beholder

But you don't know if that's what the original was. If they wanted it to have some grain, they could also have wanted a slightly hazy look, it would certainly fit the style. There are lots of movies that could stand to lower the black level for improved contrast, but that doesn't mean it's correct.

In any case I agree with outlaw55, Funimation's DVD encoding has often been really poor so in those cases it might be worth it to get the Blu-ray even if upscaled. But the authoring house Geneon used when Champloo was released was easily one of the best around. The DVD set is really great, so I'm certainly not going to bother upgrading a solid, original version for a filtered one.
