Default Master List of Classic Widescreen Process Titles (Non-CinemaScope)

Something I put together for my own gratification that I figured might be of interest to enthusiasts on here. This post lists the American Blu-ray releases of films shot in the classic widescreen film formats of the 1950s and 1960s (or earlier), with the exception of CinemaScope (which was prolific enough for its own thread) and Cinerama.

Fox Grandeur
The Big Trail*
*Also includes academy standard version.

Super Panavision / Super Panavision 70
2001: A Space Odyssey
Brainstorm*
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Far and Away
Grand Prix
Hamlet
Ice Station Zebra
Lawrence of Arabia
The Master
My Fair Lady
TRON
West Side Story
*Brainstorm was only partially shot in this format

Superscope / Superscope 235
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Vera Cruz
The Weapon*
*The Weapon is presented in 1.78:1, almost certainly open-matte

Technirama
The Big Country
The Grass Is Greener
Gypsy
King of Kings
The Leopard*
Les Miserables
The Music Man
Sleeping Beauty
Solomon and Sheba
Spartacus
Zulu
*The Leopard is presented in two versions with differing aspect ratios (2.20:1 and 2.35:1), while the Italian release has yet a third shape (2.55:1)

Todd-AO / Dimension 150
The Agony and the Ecstasy
Airport*
Baraka
The Bible: In the Beginning
Cleopatra
Hello, Dolly
Oklahoma**
Patton
The Sound of Music
South Pacific
Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines
*Airport is presented in a CinemaScope/Panavision aspect ratio of 2.35:1
**Oklahoma is presented in 1080i/30 in order to preserve 30fps speed of early Todd-AO; also includes CinemaScope version of film

Ultra Panavision / MGM Camera 65
Battle of the Bulge
Ben-Hur
The Greatest Story Ever Told
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World*
Khartoum
Mutiny on the Bounty
*It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World was exhibited as Cinerama but shot in Ultra Panavision; there is also a theatrical cut only release from MGM

VistaVision
The Buccaneer
Funny Face
The Geisha Boy
Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
The Jayhawkers
The Man Who Knew Too Much
The Mountain
North by Northwest
Richard III
Rock-A-Bye Baby
Run for Cover
The Searchers
The Ten Commandments
To Catch a Thief
The Trouble with Harry
Vertigo
War and Peace
White Christmas

Lists of which films were shot in the format, sure; not of the BD releases.

You might want to include Cinemascope 55, not the same as 35mm Cinemascope. The King and I and Carousel (not on BD I think) were the only two films shot on this 55mm process.

Should Techniscope be included? It's not that different from SuperScope (non-anamorphic). Without checking, I think that Messiah of Evil, Once upon a Time in the West, and American Graffiti used this (among many others).

I don't know what the standard AR of SpaceVision (3D process) is, but The Bubble is transferred on BD at 2.5:1 (and the people issuing it should know that that's correct), which makes it somewhat distinctive from Techniscope, which is similar, except for the 3D.

Super 35 likely doesn't deserve any special mention since it has been used for hundreds of films. Another variant of SuperScope/Techniscope.

Another shout for Techniscope here, e.g. Leone's Dollars trilogy.

Default Technirama, but what about..

Super Technirama?

And Super Techinrama 70(prints)?

I believe The Leopard, and probably a couple of other titles in that list, are actually Super Technirama.

Also, Tron's live action, in the real and computer world, was shot entirely on 65mm.

Don't forget the one feature ever released in 70mm Fox Grandeur, The Big Trail (1930) with John Wayne. The Blu-ray is taken from the only known print, and looks amazing for its day.

too bad you specifically excluded Cinerama....so wide it took 3 projectors synced together to show, there was only about 6 that were filmed in "3-Strip Cinerama"

There were actually several other Fox Grandeur features released, along with some other 70/65mm films from other studios during the late 1920s/early 1930s. The Bat Whispers (originally United Artists) is one that has been released on DVD.

It has its own thread.

And it was full length 2 fictional films: Brothers Grimm & How the West was Won along with a small number of documentaries. More than 6 total but not by much.

Well, the OP wants to limit this thread to the 1950s and 1960s.

Techniscope is still being used today (David O. Russell).

So? Tarantino's using Ultra Panavision 70 a.k.a Camera 65 to shoot Hateful Eight, does that mean Ben Hur shouldn't be counted on the above list?

It's not your own listing thread, dude. Relax.

No, I'm just not sure why the OP has limited the thread to two decades.

Furthermore, Wikipedia already has these lists.

CinemaScope was prolific enough to deserve its own thread; I imagine the CinemaScope 55 titles would fit in better there. Techniscope is interesting but was omitted because of both its huge library of titles (1,200+) and continued use in modern filmmaking; it may also deserve its own thread at some point. The intent of this list was to focus on the old-school "prestige" formats that are (almost) entirely out of use. I debated including Superscope since it is essentially just Super 35 under a trade name, but it was marketed as a competitor to CinemaScope and so I figured it fit.

From what I understand, Super Technirama was simply the name for the practice of releasing Technirama films blown up to 70mm with no changes during production itself. Would people like me to specifically note which Technirama films were exhibited that way?

Ah yes. You are right. I'm confusing Technirama & Super Technirama with Super Panavision & Ultra Panavision. Super Technirama and Super Technirama 70 were just the names given to 70mm blow ups. Guess just Technirama films will do.

No Blu Ray release as yet but hopefully The Vikings can be added to that Technirama list.

I know many of these were roadshow releases, but were The Grass Is Greener or Solomon and Sheba given the Roadshow release treatment? I'm guessing no, but I don't know for sure.

Wasn't Far and Away (Tom Cruise) done on 70mm?

Although it doesn't seem like you'd even be able to tell with how the bluray edition came out. I really wish they would redo this one and make it better as I enjoyed the atmosphere of this title considerably.

Not sure if it belongs on this list somewhere though anyhow.

Yup, Super Panavision 70, and oddly enough I had it on the list but it wasn't displaying in the post - I must've made a code formatting error, because I could only see it when I clicked edit. Either way, it's fixed now.
