Default Farscape Appreciation Thread

Can't believe there's very little old threads about this fantastic show.

Going to start a full series re-watch of this, one of my all time top 10 shows.

Yes some of the effects are very dated, yes it's not really in HD, and yes there's puppets involved but if you haven't seen it yet I envy you.

It's a bizarre whirlwind of strange characters you really grow to love. The characters actually progress and change and it has hands down the best on screen chemistry of any couple ever IMO.

The opening theme changes depending on the season.

The "puppets" are amazing, and shouldn't put anyone off.

I mean, they become characters as much as any other and develop real depth so you care for them as much as a character played physically by an actor. So credit to the voice artists, the designers and the puppeteers for making it all join up so well.

All of the main characters, good and "evil", get decent development. There are no panto villains here. Everyone gets their own backstory and motivation.

The scripting for the show is very strong as well. I envy those who can enjoy it for the first time, the twists and turns often turn expectation on it's head and the show goes in some very unexpected directions.

The show doesn't quite find it's feet from the get go, but that slow build-up is worth the effort, as season 1 lays the strong foundations for several pay-offs throughout the run. I remember when watching the show for the first time, it was during season 2 when these different threads began to flower and shoot off in directions I wasn't expecting that I realised I was watching something very special indeed.

Yeah I loved this show, the original theme from season 1 is best. Later seasons went down hill a bit, not so much in narrative or quality but Bannon’s grossness… not down with the vomit play episode and HATED the old lady alien that randomly shows up for a complete season as a crew member and all her Grossness… but Bannon always seems to do that with his series like Defiance with its parents bathing with their kids into adulthood. Not that Farscape ever went that screwed up. Farscape was amazing in season one and certainly rewarding to watch all the way through to the end of the miniseries, wish we would have had a complete fifth final season instead. A lot I ignore in this show for what I dislike, but what I love about the show I love enough that I’ve held on to it since the A&E release and even purchased that complete Blu-ray set to get a Blu-ray version of the miniseries and gifted the extra discs to a friend.
I honestly wish we could get a remake with a better budget and ditch Bannon’s nonsense taboo fetishes

Here's a shout out from another Farscape fan. Wonderful show with a certain adorable quirkiness and originality, one of my favourite sci fi series of all time (beside Firefly, new Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5, the last one of these being my top favourite).

Anytime I read someone going on about about how quirky and unique Guardians of the Galaxy is I want to lock the uneducated fools in a room and make them watch Farscape.

I've tried many times to get into this show. I love the characters, I love the muppets and its completely nuts. But I think I got bored of the monster of the week type storylines. I know it gets to arcs later on, but I just need to get there first.

Think I'll continue where I left off. I believe its streaming on Amazon Prime.

I think the character building of the early episodes is important and there are bits here and there that definitely come back up later

But sadly for some damn reason Amazon just took this down on August 1st. You can't even rent it, which is strange.

I hadn’t realised this had happened, I have been on a rewatch recently and got as far as Incubator. Guess I am back to the DVDs…

The upscaled DVDs look better than Amazon's stream I think.

Just finished DNA Mad Scientist, one of the best of this season and showed lots how our "heroes" were willing to go.

Yup. Season 1 may well be a bit "monster of the week" at times, but it sets up all the characters and the groundwork for where the arc will go and like, as I say above, you get big payoff later on.

I think I've remember the exact episodes where I realised this series was something very special. It was the Look at the Princess 3-parter. It wasn't massively important to the arc in the end, but it showed how everything was starting to come together and the scripting was becoming very confident. This continued through the Liars, Guns and Money trilogy, culminating in that amazing season finale. Then season 3 just took it even further, turning sci-fi series clichés on their head, royally giving the finger to the "reset button" concept.

I'm still annoyed at the cancellation. The Peacekeeper Wars was no substitute for a proper, full length fifth season though at least was better than nothing.

Yeah, me too. The characters are good and like firefly it has the right amount of humor mixed with seriousness. But, sometimes the episodic nature and bad guy of the week did get old. I was slowly but surely getting through this series and then Amazon yanked it. I keep wondering what I pay them for Prime for when they barely have anything good to stream and then they magically pull it or try to charge me for it. Time to consider dumping them. Free shipping is easy to get by spending $25 or more per order.

Yeah, it’s gone. WTF?

Like you say, they'll never be able to take my discs away!

But the show is definitely worth your time, I think if any season is "rough" it's only the first and to me it's still great.

Is this streaming somewhere? I’d love to check it out again. I tried before but couldn’t get into it.

Not thru any subscription that I can tell. Vudu does have the 4 seasons in SD. iTunes has the 4 seasons in HD. Although the cheapest they’ve been have been $9.99 for each season with season 1 being $3.99 once.

I have the four seasons on DVD, but I can't decide which blu-ray edition to get. Should I choose , which is more of a bargain, or should I get ? Region codes do not matter to me.

I want a set that includes The Peacekeeper Wars as I do not own that in any form.
