I have never seen this. I am a huge Tony Curtis fan (I know his part is minor) and I like Holden and Hepburn but I don't like most rom-coms. I hated Sex and The Single Girl even though I love Natalie Wood. What makes this film so good? Just asking because I am on the fence about this one...

Tony Curtis has a minor role in this. His role was created to allow them to film while Holden was in rehab. He mainly appears in the "film within the film" scenes, as a literal parody of himself actually. This is a witty and genuinely romantic piece that really doesn't have any parallel in 60s cinema, or even in anything since. I'd compare it most to "Moonlighting" in its 2nd and 3rd seasons, when it hit its stride, it's a romantic comedy that's aware it's a romantic comedy, and the characters themselves seem aware of this too, and comment about this to the audience, because so much of the film is actually their fantasy "film within the film" material. It's not for everyone, but those who get it will truly love it. It's very much NOT a standard rom com, which is why it failed back in the day with a mass audience. It's an ironic, post-modern commentary on the tropes of rom coms, within the framework of a rom com. It's a bit like Scream is for horror films, only even more fully aware that it is actually a movie we are watching, kind of like "Moonlighting" meets Charlie Kaufman. It's really one of a kind and pretty brilliant. Last edited by James Luckard; 02-02-2022 at 09:02 PM. |
