It seems that they will use an MGM HD Master that was also used for HDTV Broadcasts.

My Disc arrived saturday.

It's the best the Film has ever looked.
Its clearly an older Source but PQ looks good. Not overwhelming but good.
Its from an older MGM HD Master.
Low Bitrate Encoding on the BD unfortunately.

I did a comparison with the UK PAL DVD from MGM (same Source):
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/3238

Keep in mind that the US DVD is non anamorphic and looks much worser than the MGM UK DVD. So no doubt this Blu Ray will look miles better in comparison with the us dvd. The UK MGM DVD is derived from the same master and therefore the difference is not that big.

It also exists a newer HD Master which was used for HDTV Broadcasts.
I will only say this: Orange & Teal baby! The newer HD Master has a complete new Color Grading and different contrast. Black is worse for example.
I did a comparison with the 1080i Broadcast from this newer Transfer:
Set 1: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/3240
Set 2: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/3242

You can clearly see that this is a newer Transfer and it has the better framing.
But i hate colors/contrast.

So maybe the German BD is the last chance to get the (imho) better Color Timing in HD.

The Blu Ray is Region B.
BTW: We had maybe the worst dvd of this movie worldwide in germany: Non anamorphic, wrong aspect ratio and bad quality. Look at this Comparison: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/3232
So im really grateful for the Blu Ray.

Looks like it is locked for sure based on the back cover. Concorde is usually good about listing the correct locking status. Hollywood Classics/MGM must have really pushed for a lock, Concorde is generally all-regions.

I had posted this in the "Request" thread in North American section of forum, when I got the disc. But I've linked this thread to the listing (hopefully that will update soon) so quoting my earlier post here, including some more comparisons;

But if you can play region B discs by some means, I'm happy to report that while not demo material it has a nice natural image, and is a nice upgrade from the DVD. Also the cover is reversible so you can avoid the big yellow rating.
Comparisons with the UK DVD;

screen 1
screen 2
screen 3

For a region B player, it's very easy to navigate the disc menu, has the following options;
  • Film Starten - Play
  • Sprachen/ton - Choose languages, German is default & German subs are included (no English subtitles)
  • Kapitel - Choose chapters
  • Extras - Original Trailer (PAL) + 3 dubbed to German trailers of other Concorde releases (Bandslam, Le Concert & Bikur Ha-Tizmoret).
