United Kingdom Ema

As predicted in the Bacurau thread, Pablo Larraín's Ema is next up for MUBI:

Guessing there’s no chance Bacurau will get any extras at this point.

Adore Larrain so glad this isn’t being confined to streaming only Hell, watched a lot of his films through their retrospective.

I cannot understand why they aren't streaming Ema on the app. Turned it on earlier to watch it over lunch and no sign of it so figured I was doing something wrong but no, it's only available on mobile device and PCs.

I think that's only for today while it's free. If you have a subscription it should be on the app as normal from tomorrow I think.

Thanks for the link. My computer overheated trying to stream it and gave up half way through. Unfortunately, it's not quite hitting Larrain's usual standard for me, so fingers crossed it picks up in the second half.

I’m actually curious why MUBI picked this up rather than Network, considering their longstanding relationship with Larraín (besides Jackie). Are Network finding their archive film and TV releases more successful than launching a foreign language film to a limited number of cinemas and VOD and disc? Was MUBI’s Larraín retrospective highly successful that it sparked a conversation (both The Club and Neruda arrived there pretty quickly after cinema and the disc releases)? Or was it different enough from Larraín’s other films (besides starring Gael García Bernal) that they weren’t interested and didn’t think they could sell it?

It was shot digital but I’m sure I could see noise in some of the darker shots. Very visual film.

Wish they had been clearer about that. Still, it is a little odd, why not make it available on the app and on the website rather than make subscribers wait an extra day.

I don't know for certain, but I'd imagine it's a technical limitation - it's likely they don't have a way of distributing free content on the app without exposing all the paywalled content in the same way.

I guess they just wanted to capitalise on release day buzz to get the maximum number of eyes on it when it was free (and possibly drive new subscriptions).

The release has a Q&A with Mariana di Girolamo on it - presumably, the same 10 minutes odd that was paired with the virtual premiere.

MUBI’s next Blu-ray is Beanpole. As with Bacurau, Kino Lorber released this in the US.

Been slacking on a couple of their releases, Ema, Bacurau and Beanpole are all fantastic, I’ll probably pick them up soon.

I don't know how I missed this thread but I only found out about the film's release on Blu Ray a couple of weeks ago and ordered from Zavvi - received it the other day and watched it tonight. Very worthwhile and vastly difference from Larrain's previous films.

I didn't know MUBI were released Beanpole either but I'd already purchased that along with the director's earlier Closeness a couple of months ago from Kino. I'm not actually crazy about either of them but I wanted to revisit them in a leisurely home environment than during a film festival frenzy where I initially did. Sometimes film festivals can do some films disservices due to overload and tiredness on the viewers part.

It is. It has ABC on the back and I just played it in Region A and it played fine!
