Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Star in ‘Fraggle Rock’ Film

Joseph Gordon-Levitt will dance his cares away, producing and starring in New Regency’s adaptation of “Fraggle Rock.” Variety calls the actor’s involvement “a major boost” for the project, which has been in development for years.

The film is based on Jim Henson’s 1980s children’s series, which centered on the Fraggles — primarily, friends Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Boober and Red — small, brightly colored creatures who live underground, eating radishes and going on adventures. Their world is also populated by Doozers, smaller, industrious creatures who dedicate their lives to construction, the enormous Gorgs, who view the Fraggles as vermin, and the wise oracle the Trash Heap.

“The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on ‘Sesame Street,’ and then on ‘Fraggle Rock,’” Gordon-Levitt said in a statement. “Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.”

The Henson Co. and Lisa Henson are involved with the production.
