Sorry to start another thread on this movie, but it is so good in my opinion that I really don't mind. I also started this one because there seem to be a lot of threads that I want to respond to and I didn't know which one I should actually respond to, so instead I decided to create this thread.
Anyways, I noticed from this board and other boards I frequent that the people who didn't enjoy this film didn't like it because of it's ending. [SPOILER ALERT] I loved this movie the first time I watched it. The cinematography is breathtaking, in my opinion. The visual look of this film is a thing of beauty. They really framed every shot and made the eye attracted to all the right parts of the screen. I enjoyed the emotional struggle of a man trying to provide for his family at the sake of his ego and manhood. He had two boys; one adored him and thought of him as a hero, while the other saw the coward and the hobbled man who could not provide adequately for his family. These two things were metaphors for each other. I like most people (who never saw the original) was surprised at the end when Dan (Bale) dies, then everyone proceeds to die at Ben Wade's (Crowe) expense. It didn't quite all add up to me, but I realized why Dan (Bale) died. He didn't want to be a coward to his son. The second time I watched it, I picked something up that I didn't the first time. At the end when Wade (Crowe), Dan (Bale) and the railroad worker are all in the hotel room Dan said something to the railroad worker. He told him to watch after his son and give his wife $1000. The railroad worker said, "I'll do anything if you get Wade on the 3:10 to Yuma". Dan (Bale) then turns to Ben (Crowe) and asks him if he heard what the railroad worker said and Ben said he did. This is why Ben (Crowe) got on that train. He wanted the family of Dan to be taken care of and knew if he didn't kill his crew then they would go after him for turning his back on them. They went and risked their lives to try and get him back from the authorities and if he just got on that train, then they would have killed him out of anger. Just my analysis. I love this movie. |
