What do you really think of this guy? It seems like he has a great reputation both as a TV and movie director, but to me all his body of work always seems so unoriginal and dull.
He always uses the same approach and film technique. In addition, he always seems to copycat directors like Spielberg, Lucas, Riddley Scott and a few others. I understand being a fan of those directors, but bluntly copying their works everytime seems excessive. At what point will you, as a director, come out of the shell and show some originality? Sorry for the rant guys. |

He single handedly managed to even ruin DC's Justice League future on the big screen. Just see what happened once the project passed from Snyder's hands to his. I can only imagine the disappointment Ben Affleck felt when he realized what new direction the project was going to take!

I'm neutral on his movies but I love most of his TV work. My problem isn't Whedon himself but all of the far less talented hack sjw writers that try to copy his style of snarky dialog. It's kind of like how in the 90's there was a ton of independent crime films coming out that featured characters that all talked like they stepped out of a poor man's Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs.

Sounds like you’re forcing your opinion onto his when he already said he disagrees with you.

This is essentially a Joss Whedon hate thread where the OP argues everyone else’s opinions that are different than their’s in convincing them that Whedon is a hack.

He’s 4 for 4 as a movie director for me. Age of Ultron is his weakest film, as well as the weakest Avengers movie, but it’s still fun.
I also enjoyed Justice League enough if you want to mention that, but I view that as ultimately Snyder’s movie, not his (since Snyder is the sole credited director, and also hard to see how much Whedon could really do shooting about 20% of the movie, with sometimes even being just bits and pieces rather than whole scenes). His screenwriting credits are a bit more mixed, but Toy Story 1 (where I hear his rewrite is what really brought the film together) is an all time classic and the best thing he’s ever done. |

I really like Whedon's work as a writer (The Avengers, Age of Ultron, Buffy, Angel, Doll House). The writing tends to be deep with a heavy focus on long term character development.
As for directing, he's fine. I don't have any criticisms. The notion that he is just a copycat doesn't bother me; many great directors have taken from others. I think he is a good director. I really like his work on The Avengers and Much Ado About Nothing. So I don't really get why there would be much criticism on that front. |
