Default PS3 Updating

I was told at Best Buy last night that the 40GB PS3 would not update to version 2.0 and be unable to play any new BD releases. Any truth to this?

well, there was an update to firmware 2.0 (now 2.1)

but what Im thinking he ment was Bluray profile 2.0

But the PS3 will update to it, so I think the best buy guy is misinformed.

Now this statement is a straight lie. You should have smacked him.

(im sure there are some knowledgable guys at bestbuy. But for the most part, dont listen to them...come here to bluray.com if you got some questions...we'll shoot ya straight.)

Thanks for the help.

Finally got the wife's approval, had it in my hand, and the guy told me that that news was released yesterday.

Another newb question, what's the difference between firmware 2.0 and Bluray profile 2.0?

FW allows you system to do different things with its hardware. And for the profiles see link.

Never talk with Best Buy employees. It's like feeding animals at a zoo. It seems harmless... but it just leads to trouble. Best thing is to not look them in the eye. I usually call someone on my cell as I walk into the store to be sure they ignore me.

(To any Best Buy employees who are members here. I didn't mean to offend you, and you're all exempt from my comment... but many of your bretheren should not be allowed to talk to customers. Good salespeople are NOT fanboys.) /END RANT

Anyway, to the OP, he was wrong regardless of what he meant...

If he meant it wouldn't get firmware 2.0... that's wrong. It already has (and now 2.01).

If he meant it wouldn't get BD Profile 2.0 (aka BD "Live"), he's wrong on that too. The 40GB PS3 won't play SACDs or PS2 games. For BD, DVD, CD, PS3 games, etc, it's exactly like the other models -- and they all share the same firmware.

BD "Live," or Profile 2.0, is an optional BD specification that will allow for internet connectivity for movies. The PS3 most certainly has an internet connection, and meets all the other requirements for BD "Live" so there's no reason why it wouldn't get a BD "Live" update.

A Profile 1.1 update for the PS3 (allowing dual-stream PIP video) is due within the next couple of weeks. As the first Profile 2.0 title is due fairly soon, the update for that shouldn't be too far away either.

Oh, yeah... and welcome to the boards.
