![]() ![]() Domo Arigato 3D Blu-ray Quote:
Original post: Hoping to find out any info relating to this and especially regarding a potential future 3D release. The Library of Congress has 8 reels (perhaps unedited given the amount?) of film listed, which I’m cautiously optimistic might mean that this is available and able to be borrowed for the purpose of preservation? I chanced on a poor copy of the film in analogue, which is so terribly presented as to largely render the film flat, but you can just tell from the shots that the cinematography will look beautiful in 3D. Has anyone seen this in real 3D? I imagine if anyone has, it will be some of the folk who frequent these forums... Last edited by Deciazulado; 09-22-2024 at 04:56 AM. Reason: added Kickstarter link |

I'm pretty sure the 3DFA said they would eventually restore this one in their Facebook live video chat event when they announced Treasure of the Four Crowns. I expect to see it one day, but I think there are still higher priorities waiting to be restored.

DOMO ARIGATO is the finest example on film of the amazing Space-Vision system. Beautifully photographed in the summer of 1972 in Japan by three time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Donald Peterman and expertly supervised by its inventor, Colonel Robert V. Bernier.

If the visuals can surpass those of Flesh For Frankenstein and The Bubble(not to mention A*P*E!), that would make it an absolutely essential title. I would definitely support any efforts to get this a 3D-Bluray release. With respect to the thread creator, while an old anaglyph VHS release might provide a tantalizing glimpse, it could never hope to do justice to vivid imagery like that. I'm sure the film will be interesting both as a travelogue, and all these years later, as a time capsule. Here's hoping the [no 3D Blu-ray] in the thread title will someday need to be updated. |

![]() I'm sure that took a high level of expertise, especially given the NTSC source, which I am reliably informed is an acronym for "Never The Same Colour"! |

I would, of course, buy this movie if it came out on 3D Blu Ray. I would even support a Kickstarter if that were offered. But this movie is generally terrible. It's the worst of the 3 Arch Oboler 3D movies and that's saying something. The 3D no doubt looks amazing and had this just been a documentary travelogue of Japan it might have been fascinating. But the love story is awful and boring and really drags the movie down. But, seeing as to I bought The Stewardesses, Flesh For Frankenstein, and The Bubble--3 movies I knew I hated--I'll end up buying this to support the 3DFA, too.

Where did you find the 3D VHS tape? Is it from Rhino? I'd like to see pictures of the box if possible.

I was privileged to interview cinematographer Nick McLean (The Goonies, Spaceballs) for my book. We spoke about his involvement as camera operator for Domo Arigato.
He told me with an audible grin of astonishment in his voice: "Mike, nobody but nobody has ever asked me about Domo Arigato!" Nick had nothing but praise for the film's director of photography, Donald Peterman, who went on to a distinguished career lensing such films as Flashdance, Point Break, and Men in Black, to name only a few. I happen to think Domo Arigato's stereo cinematography is outstanding, especially considering the budgetary constraints and lighting challenges involved. And as great as Col. Bernier's Space-Vision system was, it was in some ways a very restrictive tool, what with its fixed interaxial, single available focal length, and limited range of f-stops. I must add that while I am by no means blind to the film's faults, I happen to like Domo Arigato very much. I respect the ambition Oboler brought to this project. I think the decision to set the film in Japan was a good one. Seeing that wonderful country as it appeared 50 years ago in three-dimensional color feels a lot like time travel. The one good-natured jab against the film I will offer is that the young hero of the picture sometimes sounds like a grumpy old cuss who likes to read his thesaurus on the toilet. Maybe everyday youth of that era were as obsessed with the Pill and the Bomb as Oboler was, and maybe they weren't, but in his two Space-Vision films, they are sure to raise both subjects sooner or later, as you will learn for yourselves on that glorious someday when you (hopefully) get to see Domo Arigato with your own two eyes. |
