While I'm a fan of Ferguson, I don't know if he'd be able to compete with Fallon in the earlier slot. CBS will have to think outside the box on this one, like the speculation in djgeneral's post.

I guess we'll see. It makes a lot of sense. He's not young, but he appeals to a much younger fan base and he's one person who could take viewers away from Fallon. I like the idea of a woman doing the job next, but I'm pretty sure CBS wants someone established and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler would have no interest in committing to a late night talk show and I don't think Chelsea Handler has broad enough appeal. I, personally, can't stand her. It would be interesting to see how different Colbert would be not playing a character, but being himself. He also has the added advantage of being social media savvy, something Fallon and Kimmel use to their advantage, and has the respect and also built in relationships with many celebrities to allow him to have no trouble at all competing when it comes to getting guests. PS-I do feel bad for Ferguson, though, because I think he's better than anyone else but I absolutely think he would fail at 11:30 pm. CBS might be wise to do what NBC did by replacing both hosts and use the LATE LATE show for a female (Amy Schumer would be great but she certainly couldn't do her usual stuff because they'd have to bleep most of the show) because I think Craig will likely not extend his contract anyway once he gets passed over.
