Studio Ponoc's The Imaginary Film Opens in Winter 2023

TOHO announced on Tuesday that Studio Ponoc's anime film adaptation of A.F. Harrold and Emily Gravett's The Imaginary novel will open in winter 2023. Studio Ponoc delayed the film earlier this year from its original summer 2022 release date due to "new challenges" stemming from the film's production methods and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film's title in Japan is Yaneura no Rudger (Rudger in the Attic).

Was wondering what was going on with Ponoc, it's been forever since Mary and the Witch's Flower.

They made the anthology film Modest Heroes, as well as the official animated short film for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
Also, Studio Ponoc has been provided support work for Mamoru Hosoda's films Mirai and Belle, as well as the Blade Runner 2049 anime prequel short film.

Lastly, Mary and the Witch's Flower was a collaboration with Studio Khara (of Evangelion fame), since Khara is part of the production committee.
Studio Ghibli also co-produced Neon Genesis Evangelion with Gainax, Production I.G., and Tatsunoko Production.

New Shinkai is more important, and we also got one of those those this year, at least on home formats

Ponoc releasing a poster/release date on the same day The Boy and The Heron comes out in Japan gives me "WE'LL GET DISNEY'S DEAD ASS!" energy.

[Show spoiler]If you don't get that reference, I recommend watching Freaked.

Miyazaki’s final film is far and away the most important animated film released this year, but I’m certainly very interested in Studio Ponoc’s output after Mary. The Imaginary also appears to feature a cat, so that’s always a big plus.

Does anyone else find something kind of offputting about the animation? It looks almost like CG-generated hand-drawn animation in a way. I'll definitely see this- it seems like it'll have a compelling story and I've been impressed with Ponoc's output so far - but I'm a little concerned by the visual direction they're heading.

I liked the visuals, I think it's a really good blend.

I think the digital shading clashes terribly with the art style. Not a fan.

I'm thinking maybe Japan would still get Blu-ray releases.
The film had a promotion with Walt Disney Japan late last year.
