The Martian $48 million
Sicario $12 million The Walk $7.5 million three-day, $9.5 million five-day (Everest had a $7 million opening weekend with a much more low-key ad campaign and a weak post-conversion job, this should fare better with a larger ad campaign and it being shot in 3-D) |

The 3-D in Everest adds absolutely nothing to the film. No immersion, no throwing things, not even the stage-like effect you've come to expect from even most post-conversion jobs. You could watch it without glasses and not miss a thing.
The trailers for The Walk show that a lot more was put into the 3-D than any moment in Everest. And it's from one of the few filmmakers who actually makes use of 3-D. It's kind of interesting that this week will feature two of the few native live-action 3-D features shot this year (The Walk and The Martian) and next week will feature the only other remaining major live-action native 3-D feature this year (Pan). I have read the final Paranormal Activity is native 3-D but I'm not so sure about that. |

I'm watching The Martian Friday in a week. Think that one should win, but who knows what Hotel Transylvania can amount to. The first one turned out to be a surprise hit after all. Sicario in third place. It will probably do good numbers, but it is rated R which will take a toll on the numbers. The Walk is IMAX only right? So that's out of the running.
EDIT: Had no idea Transylvania opened THIS week. It'll get second place next week then. |

1. THE MARTIAN - 50 MILLION (New)
2. HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 - 27.1 MILLION (-44%) 3. SICARIO - 11.5 MILLION 4. THE INTERN - 11 MILLION (-38%) 5. MAZE RUNNER: SCORCH TRIALS - 7.56 MILLION (-47%) 6. EVEREST - 6.75 MILLION (-49%) 7. BLACK MASS - 5.074 MILLION (-54%) 8. THE WALK - 4 MILLION (New) 9. THE VISIT - 3.8 MILLION (-43%) 10. WAR ROOM - 2.757 MILLION (-35%) 11. THE PERFECT GUY - 2.244 MILLION (-53%) There is so much competition right now for adults audiences. The Martian doing great (which it will) is really going to overshadow The Walk, which I don't even feel like there's a ton of interest in to begin with. It's too bad Sicario had to go wide this weekend with it. That might have done around 17 Million with less competition. |
