A contained thriller with sci-fi elements, Hathaway must escape the chamber before her air runs out.


Christie LeBlanc penned the screenplay. Suzan Bymel and Hathaway have just signed on to produce with Echo Lake’s Adam Riback and James Engle, and IM Global’s Stuart Ford and Greg Shapiro will also be producers. They will quickly find a director, with CAA representing domestic rights.

Alex Aja Traps Noomi Rapace in Contained Thriller ‘O2’:

Prometheus star Noomi Rapace, who was also just attached to the revenge thriller The Thicket as a violent killer, will star in an Alex Aja-produced thriller O2, which will reteam the French filmmaker with P2, Amityville: The Awakening and Maniac director Franck Khalfoun.

“The pic centers on a woman who wakes up in a cryogenic medical pod, alone, with no memory, and no way out. All she knows is that she has 90 minutes of oxygen left and must figure out how to save herself, while discovering who she really is, who put her there, and most importantly – why?”

Deadline adds that the film was written by Christie LeBlanc. Aja previously directed High Tension, Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors, Piranha, Horns and also produced last year’s Crawl.

“One of the most compelling scripts I’ve read in years – a pure survival experience with a great mystery at its core,” said Aja. “Even without the oxygen running out, the suspense on the page left me breathless.”

Echo Lake Entertainment, 42 and Wild Bunch International are also producing. The contained Blacklist thriller that has Wild Bunch International aboard for sales. Vincent Maraval’s Paris-based outfit will begin discussing the genre project with buyers next week at the EFM in Berlin.

Has potential - but sci-fi is a tough genre to get right and the last several years are littered with big busts and major disappointments in the genre. We'll see but my sci-fi bar these days is just an inch or two off the floor.

Official Synopsis:

Oxygen is a French survival thriller directed by Alexandre Aja. The film tells the story of a young woman (Mélanie Laurent, 6 Underground, Inglourious Basterds), who wakes up in a cryogenic pod. She doesn’t remember who she is or how she ended up there. As she’s running out of oxygen, she must rebuild her memory to find a way out of her nightmare.The film was shot in French, but will be available in 35 languages on Netflix once released.

A lot of actor changes for something that’s particularly self contained. But Aja is usually good at offering the genre goods and as Netflix’s slate can be a bit hit or miss this does seem suited for streaming so we’ll see.

I thought the movie would be more evocative with Aja at the helm and Melanie Laurent starring and I enjoy these 'bottle' movies, but everything was just 'average' to me.

Perfectly watchable nonetheless. In a funny way a perfect cap-off to watching the series 'Call My Agent' which strangely Melanie Laurent was absent from.

That was very dull, 10 minutes of plot in a 101 minute film. Done better in Buried and even a cheapo horror film whose name escapes me where it was used as the framing story. Netflix has more lemons than Sicily

This was an awesome film. The 4K DV /Atmos was great.
