Default Only install official firmware from the manufacturers website!

I don't want to alarm anyone, however, I just got off the phone with Sony and I was informed that there are no new firmware upgrades for any of their players at this time...

Someone on this website has posted new firmware upgrades that Sony is not aware of or has endorsed, so please do not install any new firmware upgrades until Sony posts them.

The PS3 firmware is fine however, they informed me that there are no new firmware upgrades for their standalone players at this time, so I would be cautious. The told me not to install "third party firmware updates from anyone not endorsed by Sony".

Those links do appear to be for a valid Sony server, so there are a few possibilities:

1. The person on the phone at Sony doesn't know what they are talking about.
2. They weren't supposed to be released yet, but were by mistake.
3. The OP is lying (I'm not trying to say you are)
4. Some HD-DVD fanatic hacked the Sony servers and uploaded some sort of firmware update that will brick any player it's installed on.
5. Something else I haven't thought of.

If you didn't want to alarm anyone then please be more specific with your title. It's a rather vague and incendiary thing to title the thread days after the PS3 firmware update. Something like "Don't download 3rd party Sony Standalone Firmware" may have been more appropriate.

not saying youre dumb, or wrong for that matter. but i think there's a good chance the sony rep you talked to doesn't know what they're talking about. then again, maybe those fw's never make the official page and some people mess up their players lol. i doubt it tho

I spoke to another rep and was told that they do not have version 3.70 for the bdp-s300, and that "any firmware update outside of their website is considered Unofficial".

That someone would be me. Seriously though, these links are off of the Sony web servers. Links to new firmware versions have been posted to these forums in the past by various members prior to the service support web pages having been updated. A search will confirm what I have just said. I feel this is being blown out of proportion, but I'm sure the support web page will be updated in a few days. As with any firmware install at your own risk, but I was just trying to inform those that might be interested.

I vote for number 4.

On a serious note, I updated my player without any problems.

Again, my sincerest apologies, and I am glad that it worked out great for you.

PS- Disregard the thread title, I need a paper towel, so that I can wipe the egg off of my face, lol...
