Japan The Terminator (Japanese Dub Collector's Edition) (Japan)

Street Date: November 6th, 2015

As originally posted by me in the Asia sub-forum (regarding a previous release of this disc):

20th Century Fox Japan will release a special edition of James Cameron's The Terminator (1984) in Japan on June 24th, 2015.

While we can expect the same video encode and extras as the 2013 remastered BD, Fox Japan have updated the audio specs, and this may include some semi-valuable material for superfans of the film....lossless mono audio tracks.

Right now, the audio tracks are as follows:

1. English: DTS-HD MA 5.1
2. Japanese: DTS-HD MA 1.0 (TV Asahi dub)
3. Japanese: DTS-HD MA 2.0 (TV Tokyo dub)
4. Japanese: DTS-HD MA 1.0 (VHS dub)
5. Japanese: DTS 5.1 (BD/DVD dub)

The two TV dubs seem to be missing some audio (which will be replaced with original language/subtitles) but it appears the Japanese VHS mono track may be complete.
So finally, a release of this disc without the bad Genisys-inspired artwork, and without the Japanese paper materials, and in a nice-looking SteelBook, at that.

Here is a video Fox Japan uploaded comparing the four different Japanese dub tracks:

The comparisons are for Japanese language only right? If the original English mono is included in lossless, (hell even a lossy track would be sweet) then I'll be all over this like flies on dog shit.

Looks like the only English track is the 5.1 one. Mono for Japanese only.

Oh great! We're getting a Japanese mono VHS dub, but not the original English mono.

So, FOX and Cameron approve the original effects with the Japanese dub, but not with the English language?

CRAZY!!

Yes this seems insane to me too. I mean really? This film might be an international favorite but come on! Give us English speaking fans some love. After all the original language is English! Geesh!

I doubt Cameron has had anything to do with approving the various Japanese dub tracks over the years, since that would require a fluent understanding of Japanese, which he probably doesn't have.

It's also worth noting that Fox Japan has a whole series of Fox Blu-rays with single and multiple Japanese dub tracks, some of which are technically unique (though the video encode is identical, in my experience) while others are the same discs sold in the US and elsewhere.

This particular disc has to have its own encode.

By the way, according to the Fox listing, this SteelBook is limited to 1,000 copies. I don't know why that information isn't on the Amazon listing, but it is here:

http://video.foxjapan.com/search/detail.php?id=15344

Note, too, that this is sold everywhere in Japan, and is not a retailer exclusive.
