Any 'new' extras for CE3K is a good thing in my book

I wonder if this might also mark the UK release date for the 4K blu-ray which we know is coming this year?

Abrams and Villeneuve. Must be an appreciation/discussion of the film and/or Spielberg in general. Probably gonna be like the Taxi Driver anniversary reissue, with just one new extra added and better artwork to tempt everyone to double-dip.

It's my favourite Spielberg film, but I'd only do so if it was a semi-significant upgrade of some sort.

PS: at least they're issuing Starman a few weeks after this, and hope it's a similar price to this.

Columbia were so sure that Starman was going to be a massive blockbuster that they passed on a similar film they were developing at the same time, wrote off the $1m they'd already spent on it and put in turnaround: a little pet project Steven Spielberg originally called A Boy's Life which they dismissed as a 'wimpy Walt Disney movie' that would only appeal to little kids and probably wouldn't make a dime and tried to persuade him to make a CE3K sequel instead. Universal picked up the option, changed the title and it became the highest grossing film of all time - and the 5% of the profits Columbia got for its development costs earned them several times more than Starman did. When the Columbia exec who turned it down (Frank Price) briefly moved to Universal, Spielberg had it written into his contract that he could have nothing to do with any of his films.

Meanwhile Starman got stuck in development Hell for five years while they tried to rewrite it to make it less like E.T....

Yeah, Sony is releasing it, but there's a good chance it might just be a port of the foreign barebone discs. But maybe they'll push the boat out and do a proper special edition.

Not sure yet. Was chatting to John from Indicator and he said Sony were "being quiet" about that title. Whether or not that's because they just wanted to avoid Indicator begging them for it, or are finally planning a better disc than those that came before, we'll find out soon enough.

Based on recent activity, I'd be very surprised if it was anything more than the just a UK reissue of the old disc. However, they are releasing it everywhere rather than as an HMV exclusive which is a little curious. Could be nothing though - they did the same for A League of Their Own, for example.

I imagine so. Vue cinemas are doing a 4K season with this, The Breakfast Club, The Graduate, Taxi Driver and Robocop over the next few months.

I would double dip. The old UK release was my first ever blu-ray purchase and whilst impressive at the time, seems a bit dated now.

Yeah the transfer still holds up quite well but there's definitely room for improvement.

Nice to have all 3 versions on one disc though.
I'm guessing that the UHD release will be only one version but it would be nice if the accompanying Bluray still held all 3 versions

Well you need 2 disks for BD as the 2nd disk is the documentary. However Amazon say the BD reissue is 2 disks.

Only if the BD is all 3 versions of the movie.
One disc could hold a single version and the documentary.

Disc totals can be very unreliable on Amazon until quite close to the release date.
