Long-awaited, much sought after, never previously released and unseen anywhere for decades...

...this definitive adaptation of Georges Simenon's world famous novels stars Rupert Davies as Commissaire Jules Maigret, the dogged French detective. Though Simenon's books have been adapted many times for film and television, Davies's celebrated, BAFTA-winning portrayal was Simenon's favourite, stating "At last, I have found the perfect Maigret!".

Running to 52 episodes and a feature-length play, this complete 1960s series has been remastered in High Definition from original telerecorded film elements and is featured here in its original fullscreen TV format.

This deluxe, limited edition release features:

• Special packaging
• Book on the making of the series by archive television historian Andrew Pixley
• Collectable postcards
• CD of Ron Grainer's Maigret soundtrack LP

Please note that this packaging and special features are only available as part of this advance pre-order Blu-ray version of Maigret

Note to US buyers: Currently, this set only hits the £7.85 shipping charge and one additional Blu-ray can be added for the same charge. Adding a second Blu-ray hits the £30.00 shipping charge.

I'm thrilled about this release. I've not seen the series, but I know it will be right up my street. It's the blindest of blind buys as I've not even watched Network's teaser, yet:

The teaser only gives you a split second of actual footage. They're taking teaser literally there...

Not strictly true as Pidax released it a few years ago with a German dub and short of seven episodes but, yes, to all intents and purposes it's not previously been released in its original form.

It isn't as jolly as Christie can be sometimes. But I like it better. I really liked the Rowan Atkinson series and the two feature films with Jean Gabin.

Been quite a while since I watched it, but iirc the gambon take was a bit blustery, so it didn't feel as accurate a take on maigret as Atkinson did.

Of course, Davies is supposed to be the best of them all, but I've never seen it. My dad thinks he was the best though.

I don’t know why the French Bruno Cremer series rarely gets mentioned. It has great atmosphere and authenticity in 54 feature length episodes and is vastly better than the Rowen Atkinson or Michael Gambon series’.

Didn't Network release the Gambon series on DVD? I recall it had green artwork.

Probably the same reason nobody mentions Tokyo Megure Inspector

That said, I see there's a DVD of the Cremer version with English subs. Are the subs decent? Or do you understand French and watched it that way?

.
Every episode of the Bruno Cremer series was released on DVD in the US by mhz.neworks with English sub-titles. Many, but not all, of the French releases also had English sub-titles.

Strange that Arrow only released one volume but presumably it didn't sell well.

Arrow released 6 episodes on DVD & I think that's all that's been released of the Cremer version in the UK.

Yes, it took me a while to get round to watching Arrow's release of the first 6 episodes of the Cremer series but I liked it so much I popped MHz's complete R1 set on my wishlist, as Arrow appear not to be continuing with the series.

By chance I spotted a UK based vendor on eBay selling the MHz set for less than £60 (same as WowHD but without added tax). I actually ordered it a few hours before Network announced the BBC set but that's OK, I think they'll be quite complimentary.

I managed to snag the last copy the UK vendor was selling (hopefully it'll arrive) but, for anyone interested, here's a link to the store in case they get any more (or returns due to region complications).

Good to see such interest in the Bruno Cremer series. Many years ago the BBC showed several episodes but like Arrow, lost interest. It was seeing those episodes which made me seek out every episode on DVD (initially only available in France).

Cremer fans might like to check out 'Flesh of the Orchid' (1975) from James Hadley Chase's novel; a sequel to 'No Orchids for Miss Blandish'. This fascinating, bizarre crime film also stars Charlotte Rampling. It's available on a Bluebell Films DVD but picture quality is poor - it's not anamorphic. Unfortunately I can't see anyone releasing it on Blu-ray.
