Default The Tale of Iya (Iya Monogatari)

I finally got to see this Saturday night after a year and a half wait since I read the first review... I was worried I might have built my expectations too high, but it turned out to be everything I had hoped and then some. The cinematography, images, and story have really stuck with me.

As someone who divides my time between rural and city life, I think this movie captures the contrast between rural and city life, locals vs outsiders, and the cycle the drives people to one way of life or the other. At about 10 minutes shy of 3hrs, there is a lot to absorb and contemplate, if that is your thing.

Region A BD (with English subtitles!)

I have not looked at the special features yet. There is a small accordion leaflet with a map of the village/mountain included.

Hi timae,

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I have added it to the database, and my copy should be arriving shortly.

Question

This is very good news. It's a shame I can't find a decent site with good subtitle info. How did you find out this release had English subtitles?

I bought it anyway, subtitles or not. When I received it, there is no indication of subtitles on the packaging, in the setup menu, I think it has subtitles on/off with Japanese characters beside each option. Starting the movie, the English sub option is there. I can see why vendors have not listed them, but I can confirm they are included.

The English subtitles are indicated with standard Japanese terminology on the back cover of the Blu-ray. To the right of the box that contains the DTS-HD Master Audio logo, there is a box with a square icon, which has the number "1" above a series of dots inside. This is the icon for subtitles, and the "1" refers to one subtitle option. The characters "英語" mean "English, and "字幕" mean "subtitles", therefore "英語字幕".

Do note that the English subtitles appear to be exclusive to the Blu-ray (i.e. the DVD does not have them, at least according to the web site listing):

Thanks for clearing that up... now I know what to look for!
