Default Far Cry Primal - Welcome to the Ice Age

For the last few hours Ubisoft has been teasing a new project with a livestream of a cave painting, and it's now believed that it's for a spin-off entitled Far Cry Primal.

According to sources at Kotaku, Far Cry Primal will be set during the ice age. An accidentally posted (and quickly removed) tweet from IGN Turkey (via AllGamesBeta) corroborated this report.

In Ubisoft's most recent tweet we can see a 15-second video of the cave painting emphasising combat with mammoths and bears using bows and spears. The IGN Turkey image suggests that there's a couple of factions at war and clubs will be a new weapon too.

A previous tweet teased the tagline: "survival is timeless."

It's unclear if Far Cry Primal will be a full-priced adventure, DLC for Far Cry 4, or rather a smaller standalone spin-off, as 2013's Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was before it.

Looks like an international version of IGN leaked the reveal and that version of the website has been nuked from the internet and it's no longer available or linked to via ign main site.

Ubisoft has announced the fifth game in the popular Far Cry franchise, and they’re turning the clock back big time, all the way back to the Stone Age with Far Cry Primal! Check out the announcement trailer and a behind-the-scenes video in the players below!

Welcome to the Stone Age, a time of extreme danger and limitless adventure, when giant mammoths and sabretooth tigers ruled the Earth, and humanity is at the bottom of the food chain. As the last survivor of your hunting group, you will learn to craft a deadly arsenal, fend off fierce predators, and outsmart enemy tribes to conquer the land of Oros and become the Apex Predator. The award-winning Far Cry franchise that stormed the tropics and the Himalayas now enters the original fight for humanity’s survival with its innovative open-world sandbox gameplay, bringing together massive beasts, breathtaking environments, and unpredictable savage encounters.

You will play as Takkar, a seasoned hunter and the last surviving member of your group. You have one goal: survival in a world where you are the prey. After the last Ice Age, the glaciers retreated to leave behind a land blooming with nature and resources where humans and animals alike can thrive – provided they have what it takes to prove their dominance. Discover the majestic and savage land of Oros with its breathtaking valley of redwood forests, harsh taiga, and humid swamps where you can see Earth as it was before man laid claim to it. Oros teems with life, ranging from large herds of deer and vicious packs of dire-wolves to warring enemy tribes. It is ruled by megafauna such as saber-toothed tigers and woolly mammoths, giant animals that dominated the Earth in the Stone Age and were feared by every other living being.

This isn’t the Stone Age you thought you knew. This is the Stone Age with irreverence and mayhem. This is the Stone Age by Far Cry. Stalk enemy outposts and plan your attack using weapons and tools crafted from the bones of beasts you’ve killed. Master fire to expand your tactical options, setting your weapon on fire or scaring predators at night. Land the killing blow on the prey you’ve chased across the plains. But beware, its scent may attract predators willing to fight you for the prize. The rich setting of the Stone Age only multiplies the amount of deadly weapons, dangerous threats, and incredible stories that Far Cry is known for.

Far Cry Primal will debut on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on February 23, 2016.

I like the idea and time period but have never liked the Far Cry games. Will need to see a lot more gameplay before I decide.

Time period has me intrigued, but I'll wait and see. Also smart move waiting till Winter to relase this instead of Fall.

Ubisoft meeting:

DEV 1: "Hey guys, for the fifth game in Far Cry series, let's do something crazy and take out the two of the things that make Far Cry fun: GUNS and VEHICLES!"

DEV 2: "Yeah, because if there's anything people loved about Far Cry 4, it was those cool-looking but boring Shangri-la missions where you had to use a bow!"

UBISOFT CEO: "Brillant! Make it happen! But make sure it's buggy and full of microtransactions!"

I mean seriously, why not make it an original IP using the FC4 engine? Or a spinoff like Blood Dragon? It just doesn't sound like a "main" Far Cry game to me.

Actually Ubisoft held a vote shortly after the release of Far Cry 4 to allow players to vote on what they wanted to see from the next Far Cry. Some settings were a zombie apocalypse, present day shooter w/ dinosaurs, a game based on the world of Shangri-La and a sequel to Blood Dragon.

Also at no point have they said this is a "main" Far Cry game. Given that the game is set to release early 2016, I am certain that it's a standalone expansion or spinoff and nothing more. That far too short of a time to announce and release a game as they would still need to advertise it.

Also if we want to be technical, there hasn't been a "main" Far Cry game since the original. Far Cry 2, 3 and 4 has absolutely nothing to do with the original game.

Well the article above is misleading. It says in the first paragraph "Ubisoft has announced the fifth game" implying it's the official installment. If they were including spinoffs it would be I think the seventh or eighth game in the series.

If it was far cry 5, it'd be called Far Cry 5.

Yes it is misleading. Neither the official site, nor Ubisoft's tweet said it was the fifth installment. It could be the next "main" game, but I still feel that it's way too early as they have only 4 months to market the game, especially difficult over a crowded holiday season.

The good news, is that if it is a standalone, it appears (based on the release images) that it will have a retail release.

I really wouldn't count on Ubisoft to be consistent. Isn't Assassin's Creed: Unity officially Assassin's Creed 5?

Not that I'm aware of. It was originally supposed to be 4 from what I've read, but due to the negative reactions to 3, they wanted to distance themselves immediately and slapped it onto black flag.

I could be wrong though.

This sounds like pretty standard Far Cry fare, based on recent history. Just because it's the stone age, don't rule out Flintstonemobiles, and such.

From what I can gather from various news stories, it sounds like more of a spin-off than main series entry.

Apparently Far Cry 4 sold the best of the series to date, and may have even outsold AC: Unity, so Ubi is treating it like a flagship franchise now with annual installments and spinoff games. So don't be surprised if there's a drop in quality...

Games going to be $60, so if it is a spin-off it's an expensive one.

Yes, Unity is the 5th main AC game. Ubi gave up on numbering them but in the main storyline it goes 1,2,3, Blackflag, Unity and than next months Syndicate.

There isn't a connected story between each of the Far Cry games so is there any reason to separate "main entry" games from spin-off games?
