No, but GITS may do okay. I am so excited for the film since it doesn't look like crap like Dragonball: Evolution. Hoping to see it Thursday. The visuals, action and cinematography are gorgeous and awesome. Even if the script isn't the best, at least it's a good-looking film that may even be better in 3D.
The Boss Baby will perform fine as well. |

I have a gut feeling Ghost in the Shell isn't going to do very well against what must be a fairly substantial budget (which I can't find disclosed anywhere). Of course I'm completely unfamiliar with the source material and what its appeal stateside might be, and Scarlett is a pretty big star, so for all I know it could make a billion dollars.
The Boss Baby I'm actually hoping will bomb, or at least be another DreamWorks disappointment. It looks absolutely horrid. |

No telling how GitS will do, but I predict BB will completely bomb. The live action remake of Disney's animated movie will have hundreds of mommy-soccer-vans unloading scores of kiddies carpooled in to see it. Wouldn't even want to contemplate any but the latest of late-night showings at the theater, if there are any. OTOH, GitS is a live action remake of an R rated anime based on the Japanese manga (uncensored version is equivalent of R rated), watered down for PG-13 in an attempt to get the tweenie Resident Evil, along with Matrix, Tron and PS GitS video game fans into the box office demographic (the tweenies are much to young for all but RE). I don't hold much hope for a watered down PG-13 action film remake of the R rated anime competing very well with the all the carpooled kiddies. BB is based on a very thin pre-school book completely bloated like a baby with severe gas at both ends of his plumbing. I watched a trailer and realized it's an animated reboot of the live action Baby Geniuses franchise. One look at RT for the original Baby Geniuses, its sequel, or the first of the three direct to video that followed them should be a strong predictor of how well BB will be received. It will likely be a strong contender for the Stinkers and Razzies. Was there a marketing study for BB to justify the business case for its budget that could pass a fiduciary due diligence sniff test that didn't reek of dirty poo-laden diapers? Do Hollywood studio execs suffer from a collective form of Alzheimer's? Their major FAILs of late leave me wondering what they're smoking for lunch.

I've been holding this comment off for the last two/three weeks now, but...I got a feeling that GITS could very well be the sleeper hit of the year.
Not many casual filmgoers are familiar with the anime, the visual aesthetic is very appealing, it has a female lead (who also happens to be a proven box office commodity with "Lucy" from a few years back, as well as her appearances in various MCU films) and there's not really anything else like it coming out in theaters this year (There is the new Blade Runner later this year, but that's a different flavor of cyberpunk altogether), so it might be a surprise hit. My luck though, a stupid kids movie with a talking baby and a live action xeroxing of an animated classic will pull in more money, but remember, people. Some shoestring summer camp slasher film (which also happened to have been distributed by Paramount Pictures) dethroned The Empire Strikes Back for the #1 spot many moons ago, so miracles do happen sometimes. |

I too have high hopes for it as i've been impressed by nearly everything i've seen of it so far.
Also, if a strong sleeper hit, it could finally kick off a wave of "good" live action western adaptions of anime properties. |

GITS looks like Aeon Flux and other Sci-Fi flops form like 5-10 years ago. I get the wgole PG-13 brings in the kiddies but a faithful adaption of the Manga would have been better instead of a big budget pg-13 cgi-fest. I think it will do ok, maybe Resident Evil numbers but seriously doubt it breaks out after Power Rangers coming out a week before.
I am being drug to see Boss Baby (and Monster Trucks) at the drive-in this weekend so sadly I will be giving that POS looking movie money opening weekend. |

You're alone in that train of the thought. I know people who are going to check it out or are at least curious enough to see it.

Count me as one of those who plan to go see it. Never had any desire to watch the Anime, but I've liked what I've seen so far for the movie.

All things said, BatB is just too big to fall to anything this weekend or next. It's 2nd weekend percentage drop all but proved that it will reign atop the BO until F8 lands. |
