Blu-rays are so reasonably priced now-I was wondering how often people blind buy a movie and what the criteria is for them. I will respond with how I decide if I blind buy a movie and why? I was just curious what everyone else did.

For me, I feel that with blu-rays being so much cheaper than they were 2 years ago. You can often get deals for between $5-$10 that its cheaper than if you saw it in the theater and only a few dollars more than renting the movie. I myself would rather watch the movie on a blu-ray player with uncompressed video and audio as opposed to streaming it from Netflix.
Usually if I see a movie that is a good price that I have never seen, I look it up on IMDB and look at the user reviews right from my phone. Usually my criteria is I will blind buy a movie if its less than $10 and it gets pretty decent reviews and it sounds like something I like. Unless its a Disney movie then I will pay a little more because they are usually good and also a bit more expensive. I would say at least 30% of my collection is filled with blind buys--possibly more when Blockbusters were going out of business and had some 99 cent blu-rays. |

It's something I've always done fairly often. I'm a pretty darn good judge of what I'll like and what I won't like, so I go with my instincts on blind buys. I can really only think of two blind buys that I regretted, and those were back in my early DVD days around 1999. I know myself quite well when it comes to movies and TV shows, so blind buying isn't something that I'm ever afraid of. It's also never something that I feel I have to ask others about, such as gathering opinions on whether a specific title is a good blind buy or not. Only I can truly know if there's a chance any given title will be a good blind buy for me personally or not.

I probably average seeing a movie in theaters once a month (down from twice a week when I was in college a couple of years ago), so if there is a movie that I reasonably expect to enjoy that's under $20 I'll probably end up picking it up.
For example today I went into Target and purchased "Chasing Mavericks," having not even realized it came out yesterday for $18. It was filmed in Santa Cruz, CA (where I went to college) so I couldn't help myself. |

I blind buy often, but only movies that I want to watch, I won't blind buy a movie just because it's $5. Also I usually end up blind buying a lot of newly released movies but only if I wanted to catch it in theaters but missed it. Considering most movies can be had for roughly what it costs to go watch a movie nowadays.

I do it some for random movies but I usually blind buy practically all Criterions and end up liking them some more than others so I pretty much get what I know and would rewatch and love unless its exceptionally cheap like when I picked up Brothers Grimm which I still haven't fully watched.

Only five movies in my Blu-ray collection so far have been blind buys.
Lawrence of Arabia - because I wanted to wait and see it for the first time on a decent setup on Blu-ray. The Man Who Knew Too Much - because I love the Alfred Hitchcock Criterion movies so far, and knew that I would also like this one. Les Miserables (1958) - because I'm currently reading the Victor Hugo novel, I like Jean Gabin's other movies, and I wanted a straight-up dramatic retelling of the story without musical interludes. Purple Noon - because it just looked like a crazy cool French flick with Alain Delon, a beautiful actress, and an amazing Mediterranian setting. Also, since it is based on The Talented Mr. Ripley. Le Silence De La Mer - Because I love all of the other Jean-Pierre Melville films. I know that I will be blind-buying more movies in the future, since I have already gathered most of my favorite familiar films. I always do my homework first, though. I made a lot of spur-of-the-moment blind buys with my DVD collection, and learned a lot of lessons. My days of blind-buying something just because it looks cool on the New Release rack on Tuesdays are in the past. |
