I have the Japanese silhouette Blu-ray release of Marnie, and I really loved it - I've watched it at least 6 times since I got it back in March, and it's now my #3 favorite Studio Ghibli film overall! You guys should really enjoy it - but be aware it's more of a tear-jerker than either Kaguya or Wind Rises...
I actually just showed Marnie, along with Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke, at my first ever Studio Ghibli Movie Marathon I hosted last Sunday in my projection theater, to a small group of guests aged between their mid-50's and mid-70's. None of them had ever seen a Studio Ghibli movie before. Marnie's JP release is sub-only, but they didn't seem to mind at all - and even with it being subbed, the consensus was they enjoyed Howls' Moving Castle just slightly more than Marnie, but they liked Marnie more so than Princess Mononoke... So perhaps you can gauge how good it will be from those that were never exposed to any Ghibli films? ![]() |

This movie really hit home for me as I just recently lost my mother. Almost tempted to order the import of this, but I am at least sure this will be getting a domestic release as opposed to a couple of other titles that seem up in the air. (Ocean Waves, Only Yesterday, Yamadas)

[Show spoiler] It's always interesting to see what kind of audience the Studio Ghibli films draw. I went to a small independent theater so it wasn't at all crowded, but there was a good mix of all age groups, even a few elderly couples. I always wonder if it's "just another film" to them or if they are aware of Studio Ghibli the way we all are. |

I decided to import it from Taiwan, since I also decided to get Cinderella's TW steelbook, and I don't live close to any city that was lucky to get a screening. I will likely double dip and get the NA release, as I tend to prefer the English dubs over the few Mandarin dubs I have watched. Plus, it would be nice to have English subs for the Japanese language bonus features. One feature likely not to be on the NA release is the storyboards, as they were not on Universal/GKids' release of Kaguya (although they weren't on StudioCanal UK's release either). Sure, it's not that much of a loss, but it's interesting to see. |

I'm in my mid thirties and discovered Ghibli in my teens. My Dad enjoys watching their movies too (he is in his 70's now). We saw From Up On Poppy Hill and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya at the cinema together and he has the majority of their movies in his collection at home too. Their films really do transcend generations, I recently introduced my two nieces (aged 4 and 2) to My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service and they watch them over and over.
This discussion has also helped me choose what to watch at home tonight too. |
