In general do you subscribe to the Apple echo system? If so AppleTV would likely work for you, it allows easy access to all your apple content, music, movies, videos, photo's and then numerous other applications, Netflix, Youtube, NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, HBO etc etc etc (Full list here: http://www.apple.com/ca/appletv/whats-on/)
If your music is NOT in iTunes right now or you don't have any reason to access your music via your TV/AVR and you don't have any digital copies of movies then there are other appliances that may suit your needs better like a Roku or Chromecast. If you've got your computer running through your television now and are happy with that setup none of these devices really offer anything more than you are already getting through your PC except maybe a simple 10 ft user interface and a remote. |

Just note that if you already have a "smart TV", many of the streaming video services on the Apple TV may also already exist on your TV (or your Blu-ray player if you have one).
Also, don't buy the current Apple TV - they're announcing the new box next week or the week after. It's rumored to be higher priced ($149 vs $99), but will supposedly have a lot more functionality including high quality search and Siri recognition. |

News sites report that next Apple TV will be announced september 9th at a big Apple event streamed live..
It is reported to include updated hardware, faster processor, gaming support through bluetooth controllers (Made for Apple devices).. voice search and Siri integration... no 4K support though.. makes sense as not many people have 4K tvs.. they also need to create an incentive for next model in 2-3 years so 4K will most likely be reserved for another future model. I can't wait for the official announcement. |

Actually, UHD TVs are dominating the current market and if Apple is supposed to be a company that leads in technology, it actually makes no sense that it doesn't support 4K, but it probably would have raised the price of the device which would make it non-competitive with the alternatives already out there.
Also, there's a rumor that Apple is going to launch a 21.5" 4K iMac in October. So even though Apple TV isn't used with a computer, it doesn't make sense to me that the Apple TV wouldn't support 4K. |

In addition to supporting Siri, the new Apple TV will have a better touchscreen remote and it's own App store. Speculation is it will support gaming and have a number of radios to support Apple's Homekit initiative for Connected Home. I imagine this would include voice and remote control of lighting, thermostat, cameras, door locks, etc.

As others have said, if you are into the Apple ecosystem, then by all means get Apple TV. "Into the Apple ecosystem" means whether you have bought and/or are willing to buy a lot of content from Apple or not. Because once you get an Apple TV, you are going to have to. Yes, you can still watch videos from Apple's competitors such as Amazon and Vudu, but only via "Apple Airplay", which is not as convenient.
